Game at Durant, Oklahoma | The Ballpark in Durant | Rams win series 3-0 |
DURANT, Okla. – It was a day of seconds for the Angelo State baseball team.
Andrew LaCombe hit his second home run of the season,
James Conlee earned his second win on the mound and the Rams swept a team for the second time with an 8-2 non-conference victory over Southeastern Oklahoma State on Saturday at The Ballpark in Durant. The three-game series sweep takes ASU to 9-2 overall and drops the previously unbeaten Savage Storm to 4-3. It is the second straight season where ASU has swept a series from SOSU.
“We were ready to play from the first pitch on Friday to the last one here today,” ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks said. “Not very many teams can come into Durant and leave with a sweep. It is a good accomplishment, but we still feel like we have a lot of room for improvement.”
The game was called after the seventh inning due to rain.
LaCombe's home run put the final run on the board for the Rams in the seventh inning and came after he started the scoring with an RBI single in the first inning. The junior from Southlake is now tied with
Quaid McKinnon for the team's lead with 11 RBI and with
Tate Allison with two home runs through the first 11 games of the season.
“The key to this series was that we pitched and played great defense the whole time,” LaCombe said. “We limited our errors to almost none and had great play in the outfield. Our starters did great on the mound and our relievers came in and got the job done.”
Conlee, who was making his first start of the season, earned the win after pitching 5 2/3 innings and striking out five against SOSU. Conlee (2-0) had made three prior appearances this year, but all in relief. Last season he appeared in 28 games which is second all-time in ASU history. Twenty-seven of those were as a reliever or the team's closer.
“It made today a lot easier to settle in with our defense playing well and us getting some early runs,” Conlee said. “It was hands down the best I've felt on the mound in a long time. My breaking ball that I've been working on was there and has me in a position where I feel confident in any situation.”
“Our starting pitchers did great all weekend and Conlee was really pitching well out there against a strong hitting team,” Brooks said. “He had a really good sinker and was able to throw his breaking ball for strikes. He was attacking hitters and getting them out.”
Travis Stavinoha closed out the game with 2.1 innings of work in his fourth appearance of the season.
Zach Cohen made his third start of the season for the Rams at shortstop after missing the first eight games with an injury to his ankle. Cohen had a run-scoring squeeze bunt in the second inning, while
Brett Parsons delivered a two-RBI single in the sixth inning to push the score to 7-0 in the sixth inning. Parson missed one game last weekend but was able to play in the three games at SOSU. McKinnon and
Toby Semler each scored runs for the Rams in a three-run fifth inning.
Angelo State now leads the all-time series with Southeastern Oklahoma 20-10 and is 10-7 all-time at The Ballpark in Durant. ASU, which swept Ouachita Baptist two weeks ago, has outscored its opponents 75-38 this season and is out to its best start to any season in program history. The previous best start was in 2008 where ASU was 9-4. The Rams return to action next weekend with a four-game series against Colorado State-Pueblo at Foster Field. The first meeting ever between the two university will start at 4 p.m. on Friday.
Additional Quotes
Kevin Brooks // ASU head coach
On the return of shortstop Zach Cohen:
Just his presence out there on the field makes a huge difference in terms of how our team goes. He's not at full speed, but he did some good things at the plate and played good defense for us.
On the play of catcher Andrew LaCombe this weekend:
He does a great job of controlling the game by working with our pitchers and calling a good game. He's a captain for a reason and he delivered some big hits for us.
