SAN ANGELO, Texas – There was an impressive 35 inning scoreless streak by Angelo State starting pitchers at Foster Field that came to an end, but the Rams' winning streak continues and the yellow jerseys will be worn on Sunday.
Angelo State (12-2) extended a winning streak to six games for the second time this season after sweeping a Saturday doubleheader (4-0, 7-3) against Colorado State University-Pueblo, and will look to sweep a team for the third time this season on Sunday.
The starting pitching streak consisted of efforts from
Rick Reyna,
Michael Lange,
Travis Stavinoha and
Matt Rechkemmer in the season-opening series against Ouachita Baptist combined with
Jake Feckley's outing against CSU-Pueblo on Friday and Reyna throwing a seven-inning shutout in the first game on Saturday. ASU's early season dominance isn't limited to pitching, as it is outscoring its opponents 95-41 through its first 14 games.
Reyna (3-1) earned the win in the day's first game with a complete-game 4-0 victory, while
Austin Church (1-0) claimed the win in the second game after coming in for starter
James Conlee. Reyna struck out eight of the 24 batters he faced and limited the ThunderWolves to three hits. CSU-Pueblo (2-5) was 0-for-7 when starting an inning against Reyna and only had four base runners the entire game.
“I felt good on the mound today,” said Reyna, who has 20 strikeouts and zero runs allowed through 13 innings at Foster Field this season. “I got comfortable as we went on in the game and attacked the hitters. That's what coach has been preaching to me since day one. My main goal is not to walk people by delivering strikes.”
Ryan Greer and
Toby Semler both had RBI in the 4-0 win, while
Zach Cohen delivered a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give Reyna a cushion going into the seventh. The home run was Cohen's first of the season and the second of his career at ASU.
“Our starting pitchers are throwing really well,” Cohen said. “It makes it easy to play defense behind them and we feel if we score a couple of runs then the game is over.”
Lee Neumann lead the Rams with a 2-for-3 game in the nightcap, while Cohen, Greer, Semler,
Quaid McKinnon,
Brett David and Snover each added one hit each in Conlee's start.
Church came into the game in relief and went 1.1 innings where he struck out three and allowed only one hit in his first win of the season, while Michael Weatherly picked up a two-inning save. The Rams' closer went against his norm by getting only two of his six outs by way of strikeouts. The junior from Mesquite has now 16 in 7. 2 innings of work, while Church has fanned 14 in his five appearances.
The Rams and Thunderwolves return to Foster Field at noon on Sunday for the series finale.
Bren Schuehler (0-1) gets the start for the Rams and will be making his fourth appearance of the season.
Angelo State is looking to complete its third series sweep this season and improve to 8-0 at home.
