Game at Kingsville, Texas | Nolan Ryan Field | Javelinas lead series 1-0 |
KINGSVILLE, Texas – No. 4 Angelo State was limited to three hits and opened Lone Star Conference action with a 4-1 loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Friday at Nolan Ryan Field.
“I wasn't disappointed at all at how we played or went about our business,” ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks said. “They were just better than us tonight. Failure is a lot better teacher than success. If we can learn the lessons from this game, we can make the proper adjustments and be ready to go tomorrow and come out and get some wins.”
Angelo State falls to 5-3 all-time in LSC openers and have now dropped six of its last eight games against the Texas A&M-Kingsville since sweeping the Javelinas in a four-game series in 2009. The Rams (16-5, 0-1 LSC) and TAMUK (11-3, 1-0 LSC) return to action at 1 p.m. on Saturday for a doubleheader before concluding the series with a single game that will also start at 1 p.m. on Sunday.
Sophomore
Jake Feckley (3-1) suffered his first loss in an Angelo State uniform after giving up three earned runs in 7.0 innings on Friday. The right hander from Wylie faced 25 Javelinas in the game and uncharacteristically recorded only one of his outs by way of strikeout.
“He had a hard time finishing an inning tonight,” said Brooks of Feckley's night. “They did all their damage with two outs. He is a great competitor but found himself in some tough positions that Kingsville took advantage of.”
Jaden Dillon earned the win for the Javelinas after limiting the Rams to three hits through 7.0 innings of work in his sixth start of the season. Dillon, a senior transfer from McNeese State, struck out six and managed through three walks. He left the game after bumping his season's strikeout total to 40 through 32.1 innings.
“He was throwing hard and had a great slider that was making us chase after pitches we shouldn't have,” Brooks said. “To beat a great guy like that, you really have to do a great job with your pitch selection and we didn't always do that. You also have to get some breaks, and we hit some balls really hard with guys in scoring position right at some people.”
Doug Snover,
Zach Cohen and
Brett David had the three ASU hits in the game, with Snover extending his reached base streak to 14 with a leadoff single in the fifth. Cohen, who doubled in the second inning, would score the Rams' only run of the game in the fourth inning after walking. He would steal second and third and come home on a passed ball.
Julian Duran, Cameron Dulling and Taylor Taska each had two hits for the Javelinas, with Taska's coming on a fourth-inning home run for his team-leading second of the season. Taska had two runs batted in, while Duran and Jake Mendiola also drove in runs for TAMUK.
Angelo State scored one run or less for only the third time this season and are now 3-4 when its opponents score first. The Rams are now 4-2 in away games, while the Javelinas improved to 10-2 at their home field.
