Game at Kingsville, Texas | Nolan Ryan Field | Angelo State and TAMUK split series, 2-2

KINGSVILLE, Texas – Angelo State's Lee Neumann hammered a two-run home run over the left-field wall and Austin Church struck out five of the last six Texas A&M-Kingsville batters as the No. 4 Rams claimed a 6-3 Lone Star Conference win over the Javelinas on Sunday at Nolan Ryan Field in the series finale.

Angelo State (18-6, 2-2 LSC) had five hitters with multiple hit games and pounded out a weekend-high 13 hits in the victory. The Rams scored four runs in the final two innings to respond to the Javelinas (12-5, 2-2 LSC) taking a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the seventh. Neumann's home run, his third of the season, scored Quaid McKinnon in the eighth while Ryan Greer drove in two runs in the ninth inning with a single.

“We handled adversity throughout the game and made plays and came up with big hits,” ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. “We didn't panic at all today which is a good quality to see.”

Church (2-0) earned the win after coming into the game in the seventh inning for Michael Weatherly who had replaced starter Michael Lange. Weatherly's outing lasted 0.2 innings after Lange had given the Rams a strong 6.0 innings of work. Lange struck out six and scattered six hits in his fourth start of the season and sixth appearance. Church would slam the door on the Javelinas after Neumann's home run, striking out five straight before a harmless grounder to Toby Semler at third base ended the game.

“I just had to hold the game where it was and not let them get any more runs,” Church said. “I knew our hitters would come through for us and when we got the lead back I was just trying to throw strikes and get us the win. I felt good out there and they were just swinging through my pitches.”

McKinnon, who had slipped under the .300 batting average line, led the Rams with three hits and is now hitting .314 on the season. Neumann, Semler and Greer also added two hits in the game along with Doug Snover who pushes his reached base streak to 17 games. Snover also scored two runs and leads ASU with 22 runs scored this season. Tate Allison and Andrew LaCombe also added a hit and for the Rams offense.

Greer continues to lead Angelo State with a .346 batting average, while Neumann has nine muli-hit games and four multi-RBI games this season.

The Rams, who will host Incarnate Word next weekend for a four-game series at Foster Field, outscored the Javelinas 15-13 in the four-game series (1-4, 2-3, 6-3, 6-3) and now hold a 20-12 all-time advantage over TAMUK. Angelo State is hitting .292 as a team this year and have outscored their opponents 146-77 and have now won 283 games in program history.

Additional Quotes

Kevin Brooks // ASU head coach
On the weekend series against Texas A&M-Kingsville:
It was disappointing to lose the first two and see the way we played in those two games. It was disappointing because think this group is a bunch of winners and competitors. They didn't play at their standard in the first two games and even in the third one that we won. We put ourselves in a tough situation by doing that but we were able to respond. We made the best out of a bad situation. I was really proud of them today for coming out here and playing like we had to leave with a win.

On Michael Lange's pitching performance on Sunday against Texas A&M-Kingsville:
He threw strikes and kept the ball down. He threw his slider effectively and did a good job of keeping them off balance. He made the pitches when he needed to and consistently threw strikes.

On Austin Church's pitching performance on Sunday against Texas A&M-Kingsville:
He is not a hard thrower but gets strikeouts because he hides the ball so well. It's tough for them to pick the ball up and he took advantage of that and got huge outs for us. He was locating his pitches really well. We are really confident in him.

On hosting the University of the Incarnate Word next weekend:
They are really good unfortunately. They have great pitchers and are starting to play like they are capable of. Their record isn't that great, but that doesn't reflect the kind of team they are. They have had a ton of rainouts and haven't been able to get in a flow. They will get in a flow this season, but I'm hoping that it doesn't happen against us. They play hard and do a lot of things right.

Lee Neumann  //  ASU junior center fielder
On coming up with another big home run for Angelo State:
I'm really just trying to do the little things in clutch situations and it's working right now. It put the momentum back in our favor.
