SAN ANGELO, Texas – Cameron scored three runs in the final two innings to take a 3-1 Lone Star Conference series-opening win over No. 18 Angelo State on Friday at Foster Field.

Angelo State (29-14, 13-8 LSC) falls to 3-3 in LSC openers this season, while the Aggies (22-21, 10-11 LSC) evened their all-time series against ASU at 14-14 with the win. Taylor Lyons won the game for CU with a two-out, full-count single that eked its way through the middle of the ASU lineup and scored two runs.

“That's just a case of baseball stinking when you're on that side of it,” ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. “If you're on the winning side it's great. We're due for some breaks and need them to start coming sooner than later.”

ASU remains atop the LSC standings despite the loss, but are now in a three-way tie with West Texas A&M and Texas A&M-Kingsville. The Buffs fell to 13-8 in conference play with a 3-1 loss to Incarnate Word (12-8), while the Javelinas improved to 13-8 in LSC play with a thumping of Eastern New Mexico in their series opener.

Michael Weatherly (5-2) claims the loss for the Rams after coming into the game in the eighth inning as a reliever for Austin Church who replaced starter Matt Rechkemmer. In his third start of the season, Rechkemmer went 7.1 innings and left with the game tied at 1-1. The left-handed senior struck out three and managed around five hits through not walking a single batter.

“It didn't surprise me at all for Matt to go out there and throw like he did,” Brooks said. “He gave us a great start and gave us every chance to win this game.”

The Rams finished the game with five hits, but all came in separate innings against Cameron's Wade Myatt (2-5) who struck out six in a complete game victory. Zach Cohen led the game off with a single through the right side of the infield and would score when a Doug Snover fly ball to center was dropped.

Toby Semler extended his hitting streak to 12 games with a sixth-inning double, while Andrew LaCombe had a seventh-inning double but would also be stranded. Quaid McKinnon and Lee Neumann each had singles to account for the Rams' hit total.

“I thought we did some solid things and hit the ball really well in the early part of the game, but we were hitting it right at them,” Brooks said. “Our guys were doing a good job of hitting line drives and having good approaches with the way the wind was blowing in. We just didn't make the plays we needed to make to win the game in the end.”

Taylor Lyons led the Aggies with a two-hit, three RBI game, while Galvin finished with two hits including the game winner. Myatt threw 88 of his 128 pitches for strikes and walked only one of the 31 Rams he faced.

The Rams and Aggies return to Foster Field at 4 p.m. on Saturday for a doubleheader.

“We have to come out and swing the bats better, pitch like we did today and then clean up the defense,” Brooks said.
