SAN ANGELO, Texas – No. 9 Angelo State jumped out to an early lead and held on late to take a 6-4 Lone Star Conference win over Eastern New Mexico on Thursday at Foster Field.
Angelo State (24-10, 8-5 LSC) lead the series 1-0 going into Friday's doubleheader that starts at 4 p.m. against the Greyhounds (11-19, 2-11). ASU, which improved to 14-2 at home this season, were actually outhit in the game 9-5 but took advantage of two ENMU errors and did a good job on the base paths with four stolen bases.
Doug Snover led the Rams with two steals, including a steal of home in the sixth inning.
“I thought we came out ready to play early which we haven't been doing lately,” ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks said. “We needed to get some early runs and get the momentum going in our direction to start the series.”
Five different Rams accounted for the five hits against the Greyhounds, with Snover and
Andrew LaCombe recording doubles and
Ryan Greer,
Toby Semler and
Lee Neumann coming up with singles. Semler now leads the team with 44 hits this season, while Snover draws even with Neumann with 10 doubles for the team lead.
Rick Reyna (4-4) went 5.1 innings, striking out four and working through five walks to earn his first win since a 4-0 victory over Colorado State-Pueblo on Feb. 25.
“He battled the entire game and found a way to get us deep into the game where our relievers were able to come in and get us through,” said Brooks of Reyna. “It's his job to get us past the sixth inning with the lead and he did that.”
Michael Weatherly earned his seventh save of the season after coming into the game in the eighth inning. The Greyhound scored three runs in the inning, all credited to ASU reliever
Craig Blair, to trim the ASU lead from 6-1 to the final score. Weatherly finished off the game with two strikeouts to take his season total to 32.
Brett Humphries (3-1) claims the loss for ENMU after going 6.0 innings, where he gave up five runs, four hits and three walks. Mitch Wolfe, Joe Huwer and Derek Crenshaw each had two hits to lead the Greyhounds offense.
Starting short stop
Zach Cohen injured his ankle on a foul ball and left the game in the fourth inning. The extent of Cohen's injury is unknown.
After Friday's doubleheader, the Rams and Greyhounds will conclude the series at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The Rams will then host No. 1 St. Mary's at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
