SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State Rams are one win away from winning the Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship.
ASU (39-14) remained the only undefeated in the tournament after beating Tarleton State 16-0 on Monday in a game that started at noon, experienced two rain delays and finally finished at 10:35 p.m. The Rams, who last won the LSC tournament in 2007, have outscored their three opponents in the tournament 39-9 going into Tuesday's title game that will start at 7 p.m. A win would earn the Rams the tournament championship, while a loss would for a if-necessary game on Wednesday.
“We always talk about how baseball is unpredictable, but the weather the last two days has really made that even more true,” ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks said. “Our guys are handling the weather and the challenges of the tournament really well. We were here today for 13 hour which is a physical and mental test. We jumped out quick and that is always important in postseason play.”
James Conlee (5-1) earned the win for the Rams after essentially starting two games. The junior right hander struck out three and walked only one in a game where he threw the first pitch at noon and then came back on the mound to throw again at 7:15 p.m. for the Rams after a six-hour delay. Conlee, who also earned the win against the Texans in the regular season series finale against TSU in Stephenville, allowed only four hits in his 6.0 innings of work and was relieved by
Andrew Heldman and
Trevor Hahn who maintained the ASU shutout.
Lee Neumann extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a three-hit game that included a solo home run in the third inning, while
Toby Semler also had three hits for his 23rd multi-hit game of the season.
Zach Cohen led the Rams with three RBI and was hit by three pitches in the lopsided win.
Quaid McKinnon, Semler,
Brett Parsons, Neumann and
Ryan Greer each had two RBI in the game, while
Andrew LaCombe contributed two hits and an RBI.
Greer now has a team and conference leading 56 RBI, while Neumann's home run was his seventh which puts him one ahead of Greer for the team lead.
Tarleton State's loss snaps a nine-game winning streak for the Texans.
The Rams pounded out 15 hits, earned their seventh shutout of the season and extended their winning streak to 10 games. ASU has now scored in double-digits in six of its last seven games and have now outscored their opponents 391-219 this year. The Rams opened the game with three runs in the first and led 6-0 through four innings and going into the first delay. ASU would break the game wideopen in the fifth after the six-hour delay with nine runs in an inning that saw four Rams get hit by a pitch.
The Rams will play in the title game at 7 p.m. against either Tarleton State, Incarnate Word or Abilene Christian. Because of the weather disturbances, ASU and Tarleton State was Monday's only game. Incarnate Word and Abilene Christian will now play in an elimination game at 11 a.m. on Tuesday. The winner of that game will play Tarleton State at 3:30 p.m. in another elimination game with the winner to face ASU at 7 p.m. If ASU is beat in that game, the if-necessary game will be played on Wednesday.
