Streak: Lost 1
Tarleton State Texans
Overall: 30-20
Streak: Won 1
SAN ANGELO, Texas – Everyone expecting four days of great baseball at the Lone Star Conference Baseball Championship will get five after Tarleton State forced a decisive title game with a 2-0 extra-inning win over Angelo State on Tuesday at Foster Field.
The two teams will play for the LSC tournament title at noon on Wednesday with the winner earning the automatic NCAA bid. Top-seeded Angelo State (39-15) and the fifth-seeded Texans (30-20) have each won three games against each other this season after splitting their series in Stephenville coupled with two games so far in the tournament.
“It's going to be a lot of fun playing in this game against Tarleton,” ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks said. “Both teams have worked hard all season to get to this point. It's fitting with the year that we have had and the second half of the season that they've put together that we are facing off against each other. It's pretty cool to be going at it in one game for it all.”
Britt Robertshaw (3-2) earned the win for the Texans after preserving Pete Perez's shutout effort. Robertshaw threw the 10th and 11th innings and struck out two and allowed only one hit. Perez went 9.0 innings with seven strikeouts and only allowing three hits a night after the Rams blasted the Texans for 16 runs and 18 hits.
“They throw hard, have quality breaking pitches and they hit their spots,” Brooks said. “They are two great competitors who came out here tonight and pitched great games.”
ASU's Michael Weatherly (5-3) claims the loss after throwing 0.2 innings in the 11th inning. Tarleton State's Ryan Small broke the game's scoring drought with a single off Weatherly and was followed by Garrett Hardey who singled in an insurance run.
Angelo State starter
Rick Reyna gets a no-decision after going 7.0 innings of allowing only four hits and striking out three.
Austin Church came in for 3.0 innings of scoreless baseball for the Rams, striking out three and allowing only one hit. Reyna, a senior from Mission, left the after throwing 87 pitches and facing 24 Texans without giving up a run.
“That was the
Rick Reyna that we all know is in there,” Brooks said. “He attacked the strike zone all night and pitched with tons of confidence. He wasn't afraid of anything out there which is a great sign as we move forward. He was getting tired and we could see it. He had a great game and gave us everything he had.”
Doug Snover led Angelo State with two hits in the game, while
Zach Cohen and
Ryan Greer accounted for the other two. The game was the first time ASU has been shutout since a 7-0 loss against Southern Arkansas and comes after it had scored 39 runs in the first three games of the LSC tournament.
The loss snapped a 10-game winning streak for the Rams and also the end to a 15-game hitting streak from
Lee Neumann. A 23-game reached base streak also ended for Neumann.
Small, who was also the Texans' hero in their tournament win over Incarnate Word, went 3-for-5 in the game, while Hardey added two hits. The Texans, who had a nine-game winning streak snapped on Monday by the Rams, are now on a two-game streak after beating ASU in the nightcap following eliminating Abilene Christian with a 3-2 win to reach the championship round.
Wednesday's game will be broadcasted on 1260 KKSA AM and simulcasted on AngeloSports.com. Video for the game will also be available on foxsportssouthwest.com
