SAN ANGELO – The final clock countdown was simply signaling the waning seconds of victory this time for the Angelo State soccer team.
The Rambelles knocked off Abilene Christian 1-0 on Sunday with
Katie Squires scoring in the 79
th minute off an assist from
Hanna Horeis at the ASU Soccer Field. The win was the first against ACU since 2008 and came after Midwestern State scored on the final second of regulation in a game that ended in a tie on Friday. There was no such heartbreak on Sunday though as the Rambelles (3-2-1) improved to 1-0-1 in Lone Star Conference play and earned valuable early season points in the conference race.
“We are all really excited,” Horeis said. “This game is a really big boost of confidence for us since we haven't beat this team since 2008. Being my senior year, I'm stoked that we won. It gives us confidence going into our next two games.”

Squires scored her second goal of the season off an assist from Horeis after the ball was deflected off several Rambelles near the goal.
“It was really everyone working together,” said Squires, who wore a wristband with the word 'courage' written on it throughout the game. “There were about six or seven of us in there and it just came straight to my feet and I finished it to the top-right post.”
“I wasn't even sure that Squires was going to play yesterday,” ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle added. “She is so tough that she played 89 and a half minutes today and gets the game-winner. It's a great moment for her and the team.”

Horeis recorded her first assist of the season on the goal and led the Rambelles with four shots on goal in the game. Horeis leads ASU with 21 shots this season and consistently put pressure on the ACU goalkeeper.
Lauren Bateman added another ASU shot on goal and the Rambelles outshot the Wildcats 10-8.
ASU goalkeeper Danielle Edwards earned her second shutout of the season after finishing with four saves in the game. Edwards faced five ACU corner kicks and benefited from strong defensive play from
Jordan Benfield,
Kara Edwards,
Karli Maxey and the rest of the Angelo State defenders. ASU is now 2-0-1 at home this season and stopped a five-game losing streak to ACU with the win.
“They were determined to get a win today,” McCorkle said. “I told the girls that they deserve it and that they played great today, but the thing is that we need to expect to play this great. We need to expect great things from ourselves and this game is over.”
Sarah Schoch led Abilene Christian (2-4-0, 0-2-0 LSC) with two shots on goal, while Julie Coppedge and Madison Brown added another. Arielle Moncure made seven saves for the Wildcats.
Angelo State returns to action next weekend with a 7:30 p.m. game on Friday at Texas A&M-Commerce and a 2 p.m. game on Sunday at Texas Woman's.
“I want them to celebrate it and enjoy it, but on Tuesday we are starting to work for Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Woman's,” McCorkle said. “It's about getting back to the job. This isn't the best win of the year. The best win of the year is the last win of the year. We need to continue to push and earn our way up the conference standings.”
