SAN ANGELO – Bryan Hammond delivered 17 points and five assists to help lead the Angelo State men's basketball team to an 81-67 Lone Star Conference win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
The Rams (5-10, 2-5 LSC) have now won back-to-back games for the first time since the opening two games of the season and improve to 5-3 at home this season. ASU and A&M-Kingsville (8-6, 4-3 LSC) were tied at 58 until a
Justin Walling 3-pointer with six minutes remaining sparked a 9-0 run for the Rams that they would carry the rest of the way to a win.
ASU, which trailed 37-35 at halftime, took advantage of its time at the free-throw line, making 33 of 39 attempts (84.6 percent) in a game that saw 70 fouls called. The Javelinas made 21 of 31 from the line, while the Rams shot 46.5 percent from the field and also found their stroke behind the 3-point line with eight 3-pointers.
“We did a good job of attacking the basket and getting to the free-throw line,” ASU head coach Fred Rike said. “I'm really happy for our guys and thought that they did a great job of fighting tonight.”
While Hammond led the team with 17 points (including 13 made free throws), four other Rams joined him in double figures against the Javelinas.
Dakota Rawls added 14 points,
Chris Talkington scored 13 points with three 3-pointers and
Jovan Austin contributed 12 and
Zach Jones another 10. Austin and Zones each made six free throws, while Walling finished the game with nine points on a 3 for 3 shooting performance from beyond the arc.
Jamahl Brown led the Javelinas with 17 points, while Adam Mughmaw and Reid Wallace each added 14. The Javelins shot 42.6 percent from the field, but struggled in the second half by shooting 30.8 percent after a 57.1 shooting percentage in the first half.
Angelo State outscored the Javelinas 21-6 on points off of turnovers and 16-12 on points in the paint. A&M-Kingsville won the rebounding battle with a 35-28 advantage, but the Rams had a plus-eight turnover margin advantage.
The Rams return to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday at Incarnate Word and where they will look to earn their first road win of the season. The game will be carried on 1260AM KKSA with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
