Rams Fall to Aggies in LSC Road Contest

LAWTON, Okla. – The Cameron Aggies made 16 3-pointers to take a 92-72 Lone Star Conference win over Angelo State on Wednesday at the Aggie Gymnasium.

The Rams (3-8, 1-4 LSC) dropped their fourth straight game and were limited to 39 percent shooting, while the Aggies (6-5, 2-3 LSC) shot 63.5 percent.

“Cameron is not a usually a great 3-point shooting team but they got on a roll tonight,” ASU head coach Fred Rike said. “They made almost everything they shot. They made 16 3s and it's the most I've ever seen in the Lone Star. Some were contested, but others were not. They shot extremely well.”

ASU fell to 0-6 away from San Angelo with the loss and gave up a season-high in points. Opponents had been held to 72.6 points per game with St. Mary's scoring 76 for the previous high. The Rams did out-rebound the Aggies in the game 27-25 and limited their turnovers to 11.

Dakota Rawls led the Rams with 20 points in the game, including hitting a career-high four 3-pointers. Jovan Austin scored 14 with 11 coming in the first half, while Ryan Marsh added 10 points and Bryan Hammond and Chris Talkington each scoring eight. ASU, which shot 42.9 percent on 3-pointers (6 of 14), made 28 of its 34 free throws (82.4 percent) but could never overcome the hot shooting by the Aggies.

“We didn't play tough and we have to get tougher,” Rike said. “We got over powered tonight.”

Cameron had 10 players score on the night with Craig Foster leading the way with 21. Foster, last week's Lone Star Conference Offensive Player of the Week, made six 3-pointers and also had eight assists. Aaron Thompson added 16 points for the Aggies, while Tim Johnson had nine points. Thompson made four 3-pointers with Asaad Robinson and Kimric Dixon each adding two from beyond the arc.

Cameron went into halftime with a 43-29 advantage after leading by as many as 21 by shooting 60 percent from the floor and holding the Rams to 36 percent. The Aggies hit 7 of its 14 3-pointers in the first half with ASU being limited to three 3-pointers and struggling with possession with six turnovers.

The Rams return home on Saturday to face Midwestern State at 7:30 p.m. at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center. The Mustangs are 8-3 overall and 4-0 in LSC play going into a Thursday game against Abilene Christian in Wichita Falls. The game will be carried on KKSA 1260AM with Jeremy Bryant on the call.
