No. 10 Belles sweep TexAnns; Improve to 8-1 at home this season

SAN ANGELO – Shelby Wilt had 26 digs and Leah McWilliams recorded 14 kills to help lead the No. 10-ranked Angelo State volleyball team to a Lone Star Conference sweep of Tarleton State on Saturday at the Junell Center.

The Belles (12-5, 5-3 LSC) snapped a three-match losing streak in the process and improved to 8-1 at home this season. The TexAnns fall to 9-7 overall this season and to 4-2 in LSC play with the loss.

"Anyone who was paying attention knew that we were in some kind of funk," Wilt said. "We had to get back to playing our game and focusing on what we do well. That was a good match to get in three and help with our confidence. I feel like we can continue pulling through this and become an even stronger team than we were before the losing streak."

Angelo State finished the match with a 95-80 dig advantage in a match where the two teams were even with two blocks each. Wilt's 26 digs is her season's high, while McWilliams finished the match with a .324 hitting percentage and five digs. Maddie Huth and Arielle Bond each had eight kills with Maggi Jo Keffury leading the offense with 33 assists in the match.

"Our offense was executing much better today," Wilt said. "We dug like crazy by scraping for balls throughout the match. Those two things made a huge difference."

ASU finished the match with a .156 team hitting percentage, but were able to stave off comebacks from the TexAnns throughout the match and keep points going with the ability to dig shots. Katie MacLeay added 17 digs with Keffury and Haley Bianco contributing 12 digs in the match.

"We were able to win a lot of the long rallies," ASU head coach Chuck Waddington added. "That's been something that we weren't doing the last three matches. It's a heart and effort thing and our team played with a lot of intensity today. It wasn't the cleanest match we've played this season, but our desire to finish point off where there."

Wilt's 26-dig performance takes her career total to 1,505 digs which puts her only 57 digs away from second in program history behind Shelby Pitcock (2001-04) who had 1,562 digs.

"She was everywhere out there for us," said Waddington of Wilt. "She may have missed one ball the entire match that she should have got to. That changes everything for our team when she is playing with that kind of heart and pursuit of the ball."

Katie Covell led Tarleton State with eight kills, while setter Danielle Barker had 24 assists and nine digs. The TexAnns were limited to a .059 hitting percentage in the match, including hitting -.045 in the third set.

Angelo State returns to action with four matches next week. The Belles begin the week with a doubleheader on Tuesday against Wayland Baptist and Texas-Permian Basin in Odessa before returning home to play Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Woman's next weekend at the Junell Center.

"We need to play at this level moving forward," Waddington said.
