SAN ANGELO – Maggie Schaffer scored on a penalty kick in the 70th minute to help lead the Angelo State soccer team to a 2-1 Lone Star Conference win over Texas A&M-Commerce and ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle earned career win No. 100 on Sunday at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Rambelles (10-3-1, 6-1 LSC) have now won four straight and nine of their last 10 games and lead the LSC with 18 points with three games to play on the conference schedule. Midwestern State is second in the conference standings with 13 points, while the Lions (8-4-1, 3-3-1 LSC) are third in the conference standings with 10 points following the loss.
Schaffer, who scored her second goal of the season and 12th of her career on the penalty kick, sent the shot to the lower left-side of the goal to break the tie game.
"We knew that we could frustrate them if we created more chances," McCorkle said. "They did get frustrated and committed the foul in the penalty area and gave Maggie an opportunity to put the game away. She stepped up like you'd want a senior to do."
Sierra Anderson gave Angelo State an early 1-0 advantage with a goal on an assist from
Jenny Kotowych in the eighth minute of play. The goal was Anderson's seventh of the season which leads the team and is tied with MSU's Ashley Cottrell for the conference lead. The Lions would answer the goal though with a Vicky Back goal off a corner-kick assist from Savannah Henderson. The teams would go into halftime tied at one.
"I think the start of the game was really important for us and gave us confidence that we could make something happen," McCorkle said. "We got the early goal and then they scored on a great set piece by causing havoc in the penalty area. We made the mistake and gave that one away, but in the second half we just kept fighting and fighting."
Dani Edwards recorded the win in goal for the Rambelles and after making three saves. Edwards, who was last week's LSC Defensive Player of the Week, has only allowed six goals in 13 games played this season. ASU has outscored its opponents 24-10 and improved to 6-2 at home this season.
ASU is 2-0 against A&M-Commerce this season after also earning a 1-0 win earlier this season at the Lion Soccer Field. The Rambelles outshot the Lions 16-7 in the game with Schaffer leading the way with six shots and Anderson adding three.
Katie Squires had two shots with
Caitlyn Conaway, Kotowych,
Kelli Regan,
Selena Alvarez and
Brianne Brown also adding to the ASU attack.
The Rambelles return to action next weekend with road games at Eastern New Mexico and West Texas A&M before returning home for the regular-season finale against MSU on Friday, Nov. 1. ASU leads the conference standings, but knows winning the program's first conference title will only come by staying focused throughout the final three games.
"You never want a team to start to coast because when you take your foot off the gas and start enjoying things your level of play starts to drop," McCorkle said. "We don't want to do that. We are not going to let up and start relaxing. We can relax and enjoy the fruits of our labor when the season is done."
McCorkle now has 60 career wins at Angelo State after starting his head coaching career at Eastern New Mexico in 2003. He spent five seasons and won 40 games in Portales before coming back to ASU in 2008 where he had served as an assistant coach before taking the ENMU job. With Sunday's win over A&M-Commerce, McCorkle has now directed the program to five 10-plus win seasons in his six seasons.
"One hundred wins is a lot and I'm very proud of the players I've been associated with," McCorkle said. "The players at Eastern contributed to that and the players here the last six years. I'm where I want to be and am really proud of the players that I've had here at Angelo State. They've helped push me to that number and we'll keep trying to improve that number and go for the next hundred."
