SAN ANGELO – Kenny Williams scored 21 points and the Angelo State men's basketball team limited Arlington Baptist to 25.5 percent shooting in a 78-49 non-conference win for the Rams in their home debut on Tuesday at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
Â
The Rams (3-0) forced 28 turnovers in the game and had 12 players scored for them against the Patriots (0-1). ASU finished the game shooting 55.8 percent from the floor, including shooting 72 percent in the second half. The Rams outscored their opponent 42-14 in the paint and 30-12 on points off turnovers.
Â
"I've always felt that most of the pressure is on the home team in the first home game of the season," ASU head coach
Chris Beard said. "You want to get off to a good start and even though I thought our guys were trying hard, we were just a little out of sync early in the game offensive. Defensively, we couldn't have played much better. We need to quit fouling so much, but I felt good about our defense."
Â
Daniel Skinner scored 13 points and led the team with five assists, while freshman
Chantz Chambers scored 10 points in his first game action of his collegiate career. The Rams led 32-21 at halftime after it was tied at 7 with 15:55 to play in the first half following a Williams jumper. The shot ignited an 11-0 run which the Rams never looked back on in the win.
Â
Bryan Hammond,
Thomas Brandsma and
Reggie Sutton each finished with six points for the Rams, while
Tommy Woolridge contributed five points. Sutton also had five rebounds and Hammond had three rebounds and two assists and steals. Williams, who has scored 19 points per game this season, led the Rams with eight points at halftime with Skinner at seven points at the break.
Â
Jeremiah Ford led Arlington Baptist with 14 points, while Josh Green and Raphael Garcia scored 12 each. The Patriots were limited to shooting 20.7 percent in the first half, but found a scoring outlet at the free-throw line by hitting 17 of their 21 attempts.
Â
"I think we need to execute better on offense," Beard said. "We need to turn down the OK shot early to get a better shot later in the possession. That will come in time. We are still a team that has only been playing together for about a month now and we still have a lot of work to do. I was proud of the defensive effort. The best offensive option Arlington Baptist had tonight was the free-throw line and we can fix that."
Â
With the win, Beard became the first coach in Angelo State history to start his career with three consecutive wins and it is the first time since the 2008-09 season the Rams have started 3-0.

Angelo State returns to action at 7 p.m. on Saturday against York College at the Junell Center.
