Woolridge drills last-second shot to lift Rams to 67-65 win over SWOSU

WEATHERFORD, Okla. – Tommy Woolridge hit a jumper with three seconds on the clock to lift the Angelo State men's basketball team to a 67-65 non-conference win over Southwestern Oklahoma State on Saturday in the final game of the SWOSU Classic at the Rankin Williams Fieldhouse.

The Rams (2-0) trailed throughout the second half, but regained the lead at 61-59 on a Woolridge jumper with 1:55 remaining and extended it to 65-62 on a  Ryan Marsh tip-in off a missed layup with a minute to play. SWOSU's Trent Washington then hit a three-pointer to tie the game at 65 with 13 seconds remaining which ultimately set up the dramatics of Woolridge's game-winning shot.

"Tommy made a good, aggressive drive on our last possession and Marsh made a play when we needed it most," ASU head coach Chris Beard said. "Marsh played big tonight."

Woolridge, who came off the bench, led the Rams with 16 points on a 7-for-12 shooting performance, while Daniel Skinner scored 13 points and Bryan Hammond added 11 points and four assists. ASU finished the game with a 39-28 rebounding advantage and shot 77.3 percent on 22 free-throw attempts. Kenny Williams led ASU with seven rebounds and scored eight points with Marsh and Thomas Brandsma scoring six points each.

"Road wins are hard to come by in college basketball," Beard said. "Our guys competed for 40 minutes and showed great poise, especially for early in the season. Our defense kept us in the game when our offense was struggling against their zone. We knew it was going to be a tough game."

The Angelo State bench outscored its opponent 30-3 in the game and held a 30-20 advantage inside the paint. ASU, which also earned a 72-62 win over East Central University on Friday at the season-opening tournament, will now host its home opener at 8 p.m. on Tuesday against Arlington Baptist at the Junell Center.

Angelo State led 38-37 at halftime, but the Bulldogs would go on a 7-0 run early in the second half before Skinner ended the run that had SWOSU in possession of a 47-44 lead. The Bulldog lead grew to 53-44 on a Gary Inglett layup, but ASU would mount another comeback with Hammond hitting a pair of free throws to cut the deficit to 55-52.

ASU also struggled early in the game of runs, falling behind 12-2 and trailed 17-7 before four points from Ryan Marsh and a Tommy Woolridge jumper trimmed the deficit to 17-13 with 11 minutes to play in the first half. The Rams would take their first lead of the night at 28-27 with five minutes remaining on a Zach Jones layup which followed a Hammond shot. The Rams took the lead into the locker room at halftime with Skinner hitting two free throws for the final points of the half.

Inglett led the Bulldogs with 22 points and 11 rebounds, while Washington finished with 19 points and Rod Camphor added 12. The Bulldogs opened their season on Friday with a 68-60 loss to Midwestern State.

Williams led the Rams at halftime with eight points off three shots from the floor and two free throws, while Hammond had seven points and Brandsma six. ASU shot 44.4 percent in the first half and went 14-for-14 from the free-throw line and out rebounded SWOSU 18-13 to help overcome its slow start.

Through the first two games of the season, Williams leads ASU with 18 points and 8.5 rebounds per game, while Skinner is averaging 12 points and 4.5 rebounds per game. The Rams also started last season with a 2-0 record.
