No. 10 Rams Secure 7-2 Win Over War Hawks

Christian Summers
ABILENE – Lee Neumann hit a three-run triple in the seventh inning to help lead No. 10 Angelo State to a 7-2 non-conference win over McMurry University on Tuesday at Walt Driggers Field.

The Rams (7-1) were held in check most of the game before scoring four runs in the seventh inning on Neumann's third triple of the season and Ryan Greer driving in a run on a sacrifice fly. ASU finished the game with 12 hits and are now 5-0 on the road this season. McMurry falls to 4-3 on the season with the loss.

“It was good to see Lee hit the ball hard on the ground to right field when we really needed it,” ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. “The longer you let teams hang around the better chance they have of beating you. We didn't really come out ready to play today, but we'll take the win and move on and get better.”

Reggie Rodriguez and Christian Summers led Angelo State by each going 3 for 5 at the plate, while Tyler Coughenour and David Goggin both had two hits against War Hawk pitching. Rodriguez doubled down the right field line in the eighth inning, while Tanner Kalina drove in Goggin with an infield single for the final Ram run. Neumann, who now has 14 RBI through eight games, went 1 for 5 and a stolen base. Quaid McKinnon and Greer added the other RBI.

Bryce Zak (1-0) earned his first win of the season on his second start, going 6.1 innings with three strikeouts and working around two walks and eight War Hawk hits. Travis Stavinoha finished the game with 2.2 inning of work where he had three strikeouts and no walks in his third appearance of the season.

“I thought he did a good job of throwing strikes and attacking the strike zone,” Brooks said. “He got into trouble in the second inning with the bases loaded and no outs. That was a great job by him to get out of it without any damage by not panicking and trying to be perfect. He did a good job of scattering hits after that inning.”

Eric Preuss led McMurry with three hits and picked up two RBI with a single to right field in the bottom of the eighth. Dylan De Leon and Ricky Garcia both added two hits, while Trevor Daggon (0-1) receives the loss after coming in for starter Caleb Gonzales in the sixth inning. Gonzales limited the Rams to four hits in 5.0 innings and struck out five in his no-decision.

Angelo State returns to action with a three-game, three-day series against Lubbock Christian at Foster Field this weekend. The Rams and Chaps open the series at 3 p.m. on Friday before playing at 1 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. ASU and LCU have a 2-2 all-time series record against each other.

“It's going to be a great series against a really good team,” Brooks said. “They'll expose some of our weaknesses and we'll have to step up and play better than we did today. I'm looking forward to seeing how we respond.”
