SAN ANGELO – Angelo State's Lee Neumann has been named the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association's NCAA Division II National Player of the Week for his performance against Southern Arkansas last weekend.

Neumann opened last weekend's series against the Muleriders with a two-run home run in the first inning and finished the three-game series with six RBI. The senior, who was named a NCBWA South Central first-team member last year and is the preseason LSC Player of the Year, is hitting .484 with three triples, 10 singles, a double and a home run along with 14 RBI through the first eight games of the season. Neumann and junior right fielder Reggie Rodriguez are the only Rams to get a hit in each game of the season, while Neumann leads the Rams with four multiple RBI games after driving in three-runs on a triple in the win over the War Hawks.

“Lee has done a really good job of using the whole field,” ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. “All of his triples have gone to right field and he's doing a great job of driving in runs when guys are on base. He's doing a really good job for us and is stealing a lot of bases. It's been exciting to see.”

This is the first time Neumann has won a national player of the week award in his decorated career at Angelo State. Last season he was named an Rawlings/ABCA All-American, the LSC's Co-Player of the Year and to the LSC Baseball Championship's All-Tournament team. The senior center fielder, who is from Brenham and transferred to ASU last season after playing two years at Blinn College, is hitting .402 for his career at ASU with 96 hits, including 20 doubles, 12 triples and eight home runs.

The series opens at 3 p.m. on Friday at Foster Field and will continue with 1 p.m. starts on Saturday and Sunday. The Rams and Chaps are tied 2-2 in the all-time series coming into the weekend. Angelo State is ranked No. 10 by College Baseball Lineup in Division II, while LCU is ranked No. 16 in the preseason NAIA Baseball Coaches' Preseason poll.
