SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team returns to action at 8 p.m. on Wednesday against Texas A&M-Kingsville in a Lone Star Conference game at the Kingsville Hampton Inn Court.
The Rams (6-18, 3-13 LSC) will be playing their first game since going into Wichita Falls and earning a 53-50 win over Midwestern State on Saturday, Feb. 16. The Javelinas (11-12, 7-9 LSC) are 6-2 at home in conference games this season and have not lost there since a 74-71 loss to Incarnate Word on Jan. 23.
“I think it gave our guys some confidence in their ability to win on the road and hopefully we can carry that over and get another one,” ASU head coach Fred Rike said. “I guys were excited after that win over Midwestern and we want finish off strong and string some wins together.”
ASU earned an 81-67 win over the Javelinas in the first meeting between the two teams on Jan. 16 in the Junell Center.
Bryan Hammond led the Rams with 17 points, including making 13 free throws and having five assists. ASU made 33 free throws in the game and outscored the Javelinas 46-30 in the second half.
“I think they have some of the best athletes in the league,” Rike said. “They are very athletic. The last time we played them here their leading scorer (Rashad Basey) didn't play much because he got in foul trouble and we'll have to find a way to control him and keep him out of the lane. He is a big, strong guard who can score.”
Angelo State, which has been eliminated from postseason play, will be making its final road trip of the season and will conclude its season at home against Incarnate Word on Saturday. The Rams have struggled on the road with a 1-11 away from San Angelo, but stopped their road losing streak with the win over the conference's regular-season champions.
