Angelo State Rams vs. Cameron Gallery
KINGSVILLE – Antonio Dye scored 14 points and grabbed eight rebounds, but the Angelo State men's basketball team was unable to overcome 18 turnovers in a 70-61 Lone Star Conference loss to Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday at Hampton Inn Court.
The Rams (6-19, 3-14 LSC) were down by as many as 19 in the second half, but used four 3-pointers from Dye to stay close and trailed by only four with 50 seconds to play until the Javelinas (12-12, 8-9 LSC) closed the game on a 5-0 to secure the win. A&M-Kingsville outscored the Rams 23-5 on points off turnovers and 40-22 on points in the paint.
“The turnovers were really uncharacteristic of our team,” ASU head coach Fred Rike said. “We lead the league in taking care of the basketball. I thought our guys played hard and we outrebounded them, but they did a good job with their zone and we never looked comfortable against it. They got easy baskets off the turnovers.”
Dye and
Ryan Marsh led Angelo State with 14 points each, while
Jovan Austin added 10 points and six assists. Marsh scored 12 of his points in the first half with Dye scoring all of his in the second half.
Dakota Rawls finished with seven points and six rebounds with
Chris Talkington adding six points.
The Rams shot 37 percent from the field and 35 percent (7 of 20) on 3-pointers, while the Javelinas shot 50 percent from the field despite going 3 of 13 on 3-pointers.
Adonis Bailey led the Javelinas with 14 points and five rebounds, while Reid Wallace and Daymon Warren each scored 13. A&M-Kingsville outscored the Rams 16-0 on fast-break points in the game.
Angelo State returns to action at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday against Incarnate Word at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center. The game will be the final contest of the season for the Rams and senior night for
Antonio Dye.
