SAN ANGELO – Quaid McKinnon and
Ryan Greer combined for seven hits to help lead No. 14 Angelo State to an 18-8 non-conference win over Southeastern Oklahoma State on Tuesday at Foster Field in the first game of a three-game series.
McKinnon went 4 for 5 and drove in two runs, while Greer added two RBI on three hits for the Rams who finished the game with 16 hits and were hit by a season-high six pitches.
“We've been waiting for this type of production all season,” said McKinnon, who has now had four hits in a game four times in his career. “It seemed like everyone was locked in from batting practice on. We all really worked hard all week leading up to the game to prepare and took it to the game. Now we have to carry it over and keep hitting like we did tonight.”
The Rams (13-5) used a nine-hit, nine-run third inning to break open the game and tacked on four more runs in the fourth to give them their highest scoring game and first run-rule of the season. The Storm (11-9) committed four errors, while ASU had 16 hits and no errors.
Bryant Rutledge (2-1) earned the win after going striking out two and not allowing a run in three innings of work. Rutledge has now won the last two games for the Rams after also earning the win last Tuesday over Bellarmine. Evan Rice (1-1) receives the loss for SE after allowing seven runs on six hits in only two innings of work.
Greer led off the third inning with a single to center field and would score on a
Luke Solomon single to start the explosive inning.
Michael Lange,
Tyler Coughenour, McKinnon and
Reggie Rodriguez would also add RBI in the inning and ASU gave itself a 14-0 lead through three.
Lange went 2 for 3 with three RBI in his first non-pitching role of the season, while
Hunter Choate came into the game and delivered a two-run single to cap the fourth inning scoring.
Lee Neumann added two RBI on sacrifice flies and continues to lead the team with 21 RBI.
McKinnon, who came into the game hitting .290, boosted his average to .328 with his four hits and also now has 10 RBI on the season. Greer is hitting .364 through his first 66 at-bats and Rodriguez increased his batting average to .403 by going 2 for 2 in the game.
“I thought we did a great job and showed themselves what we know we are capable of,” ASU head coach
Kevin Brooks said. “We should be having games like this more often and hopefully this will help us moving forward.”
Angelo State and Southeastern Oklahoma State will return for a Wednesday doubleheader which starts at 1 p.m. back at Foster Field to complete the three-game series.
Mike Weatherly (2-2) is scheduled to make the start in the first game, while a Game 2 starter has not been announced.
