Rams End Season With 88-75 Win Over Incarnate Word

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team made 36 free throws and earned an 88-75 Lone Star Conference win over Incarnate Word on Saturday at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center in the final game of the season.

The Rams (7-19, 4-14 LSC) improved to 6-7 at home this season with the win over Incarnate Word (13-13, 9-9 LSC). ASU went 36 of 46 from the free-throw line and outrebounded the Cardinals 34-33. Antonio Dye led the Rams with 19 points and added four assists and three steals on his Senior Night.

“It's the right way to go out,” Dye said. “It's a real blessing. I'm going to remember this game for the rest of my life. Where I'm from, I never even imagined I would be playing college basketball.”

Chris Talkington recorded his second double-double of the season with 14 points and 10 rebounds, including scoring eight of his points on free throws. Bryan Hammond added 13 points with Jovan Austin scoring 12 and Dakota Rawls and Reggie Sutton each going for 10. Dye led the Rams with three 3-pointers in the game, while Hammond made 9 of his 10 free-throw attempts.

Angelo State, which led 28-25 at halftime, outscored the Cardinals 24-14 on points off turnovers and 37-4 off the bench. The Rams went on a 13-2 run to start the second half and led 42-27 four minutes into the second half. The team shot 44.3 percent from the floor in the game to go along with its 78.3 percent shooting from the free-throw line. ASU went 33 of 42 from the free-throw line in the second half.

“I've said all year that we have a lot of great guys who are really fun to be around,” ASU head coach Fred Rike said. “They are great student-athletes and it's been really fun coaching them.”

Austin finishes his freshman season averaging 12.3 points per game and with 91 assists to lead the Rams, while Dye scored 10.8 points as ASU's only senior. Rawls completes his sophomore season at 10.4 points per game and Talkington with 10.5. Dye led the team with 5.2 rebounds a game.

Denzel Livingston led Incarnate Word with 30 points and three blocks, while Dionelle Rucker scored 13 points and grabbed seven rebounds. Lyn'Dale Brown and Mitchell Badillo scored 10 points each for the Cardinals
 
Incarnate Word enters the LSC Championships as the fourth seed and will play No. 5 Texas A&M-Kingsville at 8:30 p.m. on Thursday at the Allen Events Center.
