ABILENE – The Angelo State baseball team earned a doubleheader sweep over Abilene Christian behind two strong pitching performance from Jake Feckley and Mike Weatherly on Saturday at Crutcher Scott Field with a 3-1 win in the opener and a 6-1 win to close out the day.

ASU (32-17, 16-11 LSC) leads the series 2-1 over the Wildcats (28-21, 15-12 LSC) going into Sunday's series finale at 1 p.m. back at Scott Field.

“It really all started with great pitching for us today,” ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. “We were making the routine plays and also made some big-time plays that gave us some momentum."

Mike Weatherly (6-3) earned the win in the second game after striking out four and scattering nine hits in 5.2 innings of work. The senior allowed only one run – which was unearned on ASU's only error of the day – and limited his walks to two.

The Rams, who trailed 1-0 through two innings, scored their first run in the third inning on a Lee Neumann single to center field that scored Tyler Coughenour who had led off the inning with a single to right. ASU would take control of the game in the fifth inning with four runs on three hits.

The four-run inning, which was preceded by Ryan Greer throwing out a runner at home from center field in the bottom of the fourth, started with a Quaid McKinnon and Neumann each hitting doubles and Christian Summers taking an intentional walk to load the bases. Andrew LaCombe drove in the first run with a fielder's choice groundout to third base before Reggie Rodriguez hit a two-run triple to left center field for the highlight of the inning.

"Ryan Greer had a tremendous play throwing out a runner at home that turned the game around and Tyler Coughenour made great play for an inning-ending double play," Brooks said. "It's great to see us play good defense and score runs behind great pitching performances.”

Neumann and Rodriguez each had three hits in the game with Rodriguez being a home run away from the cycle and Neumann having two singles and a double. Coughenour went 2 for 2, while David Goggin had an RBI on a squeeze bunt for the final run of the fifth inning.

Feckley (9-3) threw only 63 pitches in the complete-game win in the opener, allowing only four hits and one walk. The junior, who has now won his last five starts, struck out two and now has 102 strikeouts in his career.

The Rams scored all their runs in the first inning off three hits and an error. Ryan Greer opened in the inning with a bunt single and was moved to second base with a Quaid McKinnon single to right field. Lee Neumann followed with an RBI single to center field for the first run of the game and Andrew LaCombe drove in another run on a fielder's choice. Neumann would score the final run of the inning and game when Neumann scored on an error by ACU's first baseman.

Neumann led the Rams with two hits in the game, while Greer, McKinnon and Reggie Rodriguez accounted for the Rams six hits.

Austin Palmer (3-4) received the loss for the Wildcats after allowing the two earned runs and an unearned run in the first inning. Palmer finished the game with five strikeouts and no walks. Tyler Eager and Kyle Giusti both had two hits in the game with Giusti driving in ACU's only run of the game with a double to right field in the third inning.
