Rambelles earn 2-0 win over St. Mary's in third shutout of season

SAN ANTONIO – Sierra Anderson scored a first-half goal and Selena Alvarez added insurance with a goal late in the game to lead the Angelo State soccer team to a 2-0 non-conference win over St. Mary's on Sunday at the Our Lady of the Lake Field.

ASU (3-2-1) earned its third shutout of the season and senior goalkeeper Dani Edwards recorded her second individual shutout of the season and the 10th of her career. It is the second straight shutout for the Rambelles after last Sunday's 2-0 win over Colorado Mesa at the ASU Soccer Field.

"It was a good win and nice for our team to get another shutout," ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. "We limited St. Mary's to only four shots on goal and continued playing really well on defense. I'm a little disappointed we weren't able to score a couple more goals, but we can take lessons from those missed opportunities to improve as we move forward."

The win started a five-game road trip following Friday's game at Dallas Baptist being canceled because of rain.

Anderson, who came into the game leading the Rambelles with 16 shots but had not scored, struck for her first goal of the season and third in her career in the 34th minute of play. Alvarez also scored the third goal in her career and the second of the season with a shot from 30-yards out finding the back of the net with nine minutes remaining.

"I was excited to see Sierra get that goal and breakthrough for the first time this season," McCorkle said. "She's been putting in a lot of effort and it was nice to see it pay off for her with a goal."

Freshman midfielder Kathleen Keoughan led the Rambelles with three shots with Kelli Regan adding two attacks.  Maggie Schaffer and Brianne Brown, the goal scorers in last week's win over CMU each had shots on goal for ASU.

ASU finished the game with an 11-9 shot advantage and took two corner kicks against St. Mary's (2-3-1). Jamey Coronado led St. Mary's with two shots on goal with Kristal Williams and Sam Lara adding one each. The Rattlers, who are now 2-1 in their home city, have now dropped three straight games after starting the season with a 2-0-1 record.

ASU has now outscored its opponents 7-0 on Sunday's this season with a 3-0 win over Wayland Baptist two weeks ago followed by the 2-0 win over Colorado Mesa last weekend and its result against the Rattlers.

The game was played at Our Lady of the Lake Field because of construction on the Rattlers' home field on the St. Mary's University campus.

UP NEXT: Angelo State continues its road trip next week with games at Midwestern State and Oklahoma Christian. The Rambelles open LSC play against the Mustangs at 7 p.m. on Thursday before venturing outside conference for the final time this season against OCU at noon on Saturday. Midwestern State is 4-2 on the season and on a three-game winning streak with victories over Rogers State, East Central Oklahoma and OCU.
