Rambelles open Lone Star Conference play with 1-0 win over Midwestern State

Sierra Anderson
WICHITA FALLS – Angelo State's Sierra Anderson scored a goal with 10 minutes to play and Dani Edwards secured six saves to lead the Rambelles to a 1-0 Lone Star Conference win over Midwestern State on Thursday at the MSU Soccer Field.

ASU (4-2-1, 1-0-0 LSC) has now recorded three straight shutouts and has not allowed a goal in regulation in the last five games. MSU falls to 4-3-0 overall and to 0-1-1 in LSC play with the loss.

"We did a great job of talking with one another and have really picked up our intensity the last couple of weeks," Edwards said. "Our confidence is at a good point right now on defense and that has carried over to the entire team. We know what we are capable of and are doing it right now."

Anderson, a sophomore who was playing back in her hometown of Wichita Falls, scored the game's only goal at the 79:42 mark on an unassisted goal on ASU's 14th shot of the game. The score was her second of the season and her second in the last two games after she also scored last Sunday in ASU's 2-0 win over St. Mary's. It was also the fourth of her career and she is now tied for the team lead this season with Jenny Kotowych and Kathleen Keoughan.

The Rambelles have allowed only four goals through the first seven games of the season and are holding opponents to a 0.068 shot percentage.

"I think our team is showing a lot of pride in team defending," ASU head coach Travis McCorkle said. "Our entire team, from the defenders and goalkeepers staying focused and our midfielders coming back on set pieces to help is giving us a chance to get the results we want. It starts with team defending and if we continuing playing like that then we'll always have a good chance to get results and points in the standings."

Edwards now has 24 saves this season and three shutouts a year after being named the LSC's Goalkeeper of the Year. The shutout against the Mustangs was the 11th of her career at ASU and was the fourth for the Rambelles as a team this season.

Maggie Schaffer led the Rambelles with five shots, while Anderson had three. Cynthia Andrews and Kelli Regan added a shot on goal each for ASU which had a 7-6 shot on goal advantage in the game. ASU had a 15-13 advantage in shots.

ASU and the Mustangs were scoreless at halftime with Angelo State taking an 8-4 shot advantage into the break. Edwards had three saves, while Maggie Schaffer led the Rambelles with four shots. MSU led 3-1 in the shots on goal category with Morgan Hannon leading the Mustangs with two shots on goal which Edwards saved for ASU.

The Rambelles return to action at noon on Saturday at Oklahoma Christian at the Eagle Soccer Field in Edmond, Okla. The game is the final non-conference contest for the Rambelles this season.

"We need to complete the trip," McCorkle said. "When you have high aspirations as a program then winning on the road consistently is something that has to be done. We're going to play a good team on Saturday. This was a great win for us tonight against Midwestern that the girls should enjoy, but it's only one game. We are only one game into conference play and this trip. We can't lose focus."

ASU will resume LSC play next week with road games at Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Woman's.
