OKLAHOMA CITY – The Angelo State soccer team extended its winning streak to four games with a 3-1 non-conference victory over Oklahoma Christian on a rainy Saturday at Eagle Soccer Field.
The Rambelles (5-2-1) allowed their first goal in regulation in five games just eight minutes into action, but responded with three unanswered goals to take the win. ASU received goals from
Selena Alvarez,
Sierra Anderson and
Kelli Regan, while junior defender
Caitlyn Conaway had two assists in the game.
Alvarez scored the first goal of the game on a header off an assist from Conaway at the 33 minute mark of the first half. ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle called it the goal of the season after the game. Â
"I always think that I'll be able to get on every set piece with my head," said Alvarez, who is tied for the team lead with Anderson with three goals this season. "I saw it as a great opportunity when Conaway sent in a great ball that was low and driven. I backed off to the post and my player backed off of me. I just dove and was pleased it went in."
With the game tied at 1 at halftime, ASU took its first lead when Conaway found a streaking Anderson who broke away from the OC defense for her third goal of the season. Just seven minutes later, Regan scored her career's first goal off an assist from
Maggie Schaffer in the 68th minute of play.
Sophomore goalkeeper
Shantel Wittke recorded six saves in a complete-game performance. OC's Somer Helms broke the shutout streak ASU had going with a goal in the 8th minute off an assist from Addie Ryan.
"We been taking a lot of pride in our team defending and getting our shutout streak higher," ASU senior defender
Trisha Killen said. "We let that one goal and we're going to continue working to get another streak going. We can improve our organization in the back to be an even tougher team."
ASU outshot the Eagles 19-12 in the game and are now 3-0-1 on the road this season. The Rambelles went 2-0-0 this weekend following a 1-0 win on Thursday at Midwestern State in the Lone Star Conference opener.
"We're on our way back with two road wins and are excited about that," McCorkle said.
The Rambelles will continue a five-game road trip next weekend with games at Texas A&M-Commerce and Texas Woman's.
