Â
SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team returns to action against Eastern New Mexico at 5 p.m. (CST) on Saturday in a Lone Star Conference game at the Greyhound Arena in Portales, N.M.
Â
The Rams (12-3, 2-1 LSC) are coming off a 71-59 win over West Texas A&M, while ENMU (7-7, 1-2 LSC) secured its first conference win with an 82-78 road win over Texas A&M-Kingsville on Wednesday. ASU is 4-3 away from San Angelo this season (2-3 road / 2-0 neutral) and will be looking to snap a five-game losing streak to the Greyhounds which dates back to a 70-68 win in Portales on Jan. 26, 2011.
Â
"Eastern New Mexico is a good basketball team," ASU head coach
Chris Beard said. "They return two all-conference guards from last year's team. They are getting good production from their frontline players as well. Andy (Coach Andrew Helton) does a good job setting up their team. I have always had a lot of respect for Andy, since he was an assistant at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. We will have to play very well to have a chance to compete."
Â
The Rams are off to the program's best 15-game start to a season since the 1993-94 team was also 12-3 and began the year with a 15-3 record. A win against ENMU would give ASU its first three-game conference win streak since the 2008-09 season when the Rams ran off five straight LSC wins.
Â
Angelo State comes into the game averaging 74.9 points per game and is limiting opponents to 68.8. The Rams rank second in the LSC by shooting 48 percent from the field and are also second by holding the opposition to 39 percent shooting. ASU is shooting 33 percent on 3-pointers (74 of 218) and is shooting 65 percent (256 of 393) from the free-throw line. In LSC play, ASU is averaging 64 points per game and is shooting 38 percent.
Â
The only losses the Rams have suffered this season have come on the road with defeats at Arkansas Tech, Arkansas-Monticello and last week at Tarleton State in their conference opener. ASU is scoring six points below its season average (68.9) away from home.
Â
"Road games are tough to win in college basketball, especially in a conference like the Lone Star," Beard said. "Our focus, offensive execution, and defensive commitment must be consistent for a full 40 minutes to have a chance to compete on the road in Portales."
Â
RAM RUNDOWN
Â
Kenny Williams comes into the game at ENMU with six double-doubles this season and is leading the Rams with 18.7 points and 8.1 rebounds per game. He has led the team in scoring and rebounding in 11 games this season and has scored 20 or more points in eight games. He has scored in double figures in all but one of the Rams' first 15 games of the season. He scored a season-high 28 points in the season opener against East Central and secured a season-high 13 rebounds in a neutral-court win over Arkansas-Fort Smith. Williams was named the LSC Offensive Player of the Week on Nov. 3 and the LSC Defensive Player of the Week on Dec. 7. He is the only player to win a conference weekly honor on both sides of the court this season and is averaging 22 points and 8.0 rebounds per game in the first three LSC games (25/10 at Tarleton, 21/8 against A&M-Commerce, 20/6 against WT). Against the Lions, Williams had a highlight-reel dunk which created a YouTube video which has received over 6,000 views in less than a week.
Â
Bryan Hammond is averaging 11.0 points per game in conference play and 9.9 points per game throughout the season. Hammond, who is shooting 49 percent from the field, delivered the heroics against A&M-Commerce by hitting a layup with four seconds remaining to give the Rams the 67-65 win. Hammond leads ASU with 61 assists this season and has 137 assists in his career. He transferred to ASU last season after playing the previous two seasons at Nicholls State with fellow senior
Chris Talkington. A New Orleans native, Hammond is sixth in the conference in assists and has scored in double figures in seven games this season after going for 13 on Wednesday against WT.
Â
Talkington is averaging 7.7 points and 4.0 rebounds per game through the first three LSC games this season and is at 6.4 points and 2.1 rebounds throughout the year. A Grand Prairie native, he leads ASU with 18 3-pointers this season and has hit 61 in his career in San Angelo. He has scored in double figures six times this season with a season-high 17 coming at Arkansas-Monticello when he went 5-for-5 on 3-pointers.
Tommy Woolridge is second on the team with 17 3-pointers made this season and is averaging 7.4 points per game this season. In his first season at ASU, Woolridge has also contributed 22 assists and 15 steals. Â

Ryan Marsh (15) in the defensive category. Marsh has seven blocks in the past two games with three against WT after having four swats against A&M-Commerce. Marsh, a senior from Burleson and transfer from Dallas Baptist, is averaging 2.3 points and 2.2 rebounds per game as a reserve.
Â
Reggie Sutton,
Omari Gudul,
Thomas Brandsma and
Nash Nelson are providing depth in their sophomore seasons, while
Chantz Chambers has made an immediate impact as a freshman. Sutton is averaging 5.3 points per game in his second season at ASU, while Gudul is scoring 4.3 points and has grabbed 4.3 rebounds per game after transferring from Ranger College. Sutton is coming off a season-high 12 points against WT where he went 7 of 8 from the free-throw line and also hit a 3-pointer. Brandsma scored a season-high 11 points on Sunday night against the Lions after hitting three 3-pointers and going 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Gudul recorded a double-double earlier in the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds against York College, while Nelson has contributed 14 assists.
Â
"One of the strengths of our team continues to be our depth," Beard said. "We have several players capable of scoring in double figures on any given night, including guys coming off the bench. Our practices have been competitive all season long and we give our six seniors a lot of the credit for our team depth and for keeping each player ready to make a contribution to the game when called upon."
