PORTALES, N.M. – Angelo State forced overtime after trailing throughout, but fell 72-68 to Eastern New Mexico in a Lone Star Conference game on Saturday at the Greyhound Arena.
The Rams (12-4, 2-2 LSC) took the game into overtime at 62-62 with a runner from
Bryan Hammond in the lane with 41 seconds remaining after he previously tied the game at 60 with a pair of free throws. The Rams had the ball with eight seconds remaining in regulation and a chance to win, but were unable to hit the initial shot or regain possession for a solid put-back as time expired. ENMU (8-7, 2-2 LSC) finished the extra session on a 4-0 run after the game was tied at 68 on a
Reggie Sutton tip-in with 1:01 left in overtime. Rodney Blackmon gave the Greyhounds a 70-68 lead before Raphael Love hit a free throw with 22 seconds remaining and Devone Davis hit another with nine seconds for the final points of the game.
It was the first overtime game of the season for both teams and extend ENMU's winning streak over the Rams to six games. ASU will return to action at 8 p.m. on Wednesday when it hosts Midwestern State at the Junell Center.
Kenny Williams recorded his seventh double-double of the season with 23 points and 15 rebounds, including hitting a 3-pointer to tie the game at 56 with 3:24 remaining in regulation. Hammond added 15 points and led the team with three assists, while
Tommy Woolridge had seven points and five rebounds.
Daniel Skinner was second on the team with nine rebounds and had six points.
The Rams were limited to 33 percent shooting in overtime on nine shots and finished the game at 40 percent (25 of 62) in the game. ASU had a 43-30 advantage in rebounds, including a 16-8 lead on the offensive side of the court. The team went 5 of 15 on 3-pointers with Williams and
Chris Talkington hitting two and Woolridge making the other.
Cornelius Cammock led ENMU with 16 points and 11 rebounds for his second double-double of the season, while Davis contributed 13, Rodney Blackmon had 12 points and Love added 10. Davis led the Greyhounds with five assists and Phil Henry had three blocks. ENMU finished the game shooting 46.2 percent from the field despite going 3 of 14 from beyond the arc. Â
Williams led the Rams with 13 points and four rebounds in the first half, while Skinner had four points and four rebounds. Woolridge added two points and two assists with
Zach Jones, Talkington and
Ryan Marsh also having two rebounds. Marsh had a block with Talkington and Williams each hitting 3-pointers.
The Rams shot 42.3 percent from the field and were limited to 2 of 8 (25 percent) on 3-pointers. ENMU went 46.2 percent from the field and hit 3 of its 7 attempts (42.9 percent) from beyond the arc. Blackmon led the Greyhounds with nine points, while Cammock had seven rebounds and six points in the first half.
The first-half deficit was only the fourth time this season the Rams trailed after the first 20 minutes of play this season. ASU was outscored 14-10 in the paint in the first half and 13-4 on points off turnovers. Woolridge had the Rams' only two points off the bench at halftime.
