LAWTON, Okla. – Tommy Woolridge went off with a career-high 32 points and
Chris Talkington scored a season-high 20 to help lead the Angelo State men's basketball team to an 88-75 Lone Star Conference win over Cameron on Saturday at the Aggie Gym.
ASU (14-4, 4-2 LSC) snapped a five-game losing streak to the Aggies (9-8, 3-3 LSC) and won in Lawton for the first time in seven years along with picking up its first road win in conference play this season. The Rams never trailed in the game after a Talkington 3-pointer opened scoring 54 seconds into the game and finished with a 59.2 shooting percentage. ASU's defense limited Cameron to 44.8 percent shooting and dominated throughout despite only five turnovers by the Aggies.
"I was proud of our effort and offensive execution today," ASU head coach
Chris Beard said. "We played well as a team for about 35 minutes. The last five minutes, Cameron kicked us. We will learn from it and get better."
Woolridge, who went 6-for-6 on 3-pointers and scored 19 of his points in the second half, became the first Ram to score over 30 points since LaDon Huckaby had 39 against Texas A&M-Commerce on Feb. 25, 2012. Â His previous career-high came in a 19-point performance at Arkansas Tech and came after he had 12 points on Wednesday in ASU's win over Midwestern State. It was the third game this season Woolridge led the Rams in scoring and was the eighth time he's scored in double digits.
Talkington went 3-for-3 from beyond the arc, scoring 13 of his 20 in the first half to help the Rams go into halftime with a 44-30 lead. Talkington was five points off his career-high which came last season in a 25-point performance against Arlington Baptist. ASU hit nine 3-pointers in the game after shooting 52.9 percent on its long-range attempts.
Kenny Williams added 10 points and seven rebounds, while
Bryan Hammond led the team with eight assists and contributed six points in the win. Hammond's eight assists matched his season-high which he also had against McMurry earlier in the season. Williams was held to his lowest point production in the past 11 games, but has now scored in double digits in 17 of 18 games this season.
"Chris and Tommy obviously had good offensive games," Beard said. "But equal credit goes to the other guys for making the pass and setting the screen."
ASU had a 31-23 rebounding advantage and went 21 of 27 (77.8 percent) from the free-throw line in the game.
Woolridge hit back-to-back 3-pointers midway through the second half to give the Rams a 63-49 lead with 9:37 remaining in the game, but the Aggies fought back to cut it to 10 at 64-54 with a pair of Desmond Henry free throws with eight minutes to play. ASU's lead grew to 15 at 78-63 on a pair of Woolridge free throws, which pushed his total to 30, with 2:44 to play before the Aggies cut it to 10 after a Craig Foster 3-pointer and two free throws by Will Cook. The lead crept to single-digits (79-71) for the first time in the second half with a 3-pointer from Cook with 1:40 on the clock to cap an 11-0 run by the Aggies. Woolridge ended the run with a pair of free throws and a layup by Williams gave the Rams an 82-74 advantage with a minute to play.
Craig Foster led Cameron with 22 points, while Will Cook had 20 points before fouling out late in the contest. Foster went 8 of 15 from the field and also had three assists. Asaad Robinson added nine points and a team-high five assists for CU.
"Cameron is very well coached," Beard said. "They only had five turnovers as a team. Nate Gamet is doing a good job. Craig Foster was as good as advertised. He is a very smart player."
Woolridge and Talkington led Angelo State with 13 first-half points to stake the Rams to a 44-30 lead. Talkington went 5-for-5 from the field in the first half, including hitting three 3-pointers. Woolridge went 4-for-6 from the field, hitting two 3-pointers and making three free throws.
Reggie Sutton and Williams each had six points with Williams and Woolridge leading the team with three rebounds. Sutton finished the game with the six first-half point and also had three rebounds. The 14-point lead at the break was the largest lead ASU had throughout the first 20 minutes.
The Rams jumped out to a quick 11-4 lead in the game off a
Ryan Marsh jumper just five minutes into the game. The early advantage started with Talkington scoring five points and Sutton adding four. Talkington would hit another jumper a minute later to push the advantage to 13-4 before Foster drilled a 3-pointer for the Ags before Woolridge followed up a miss with a short-range jumper in the lane to give the Rams a 18-9 lead and then hit a 3-pointer to push ASU's advantage to 22-11 halfway through the first half of play.
ASU extended the lead to 26-16 with layups by Sutton and Williams, but the Aggies responded with a 7-0 run with McGarty scoring three points and Mayberry hitting a layup. Talkington would stop the run by hitting his second 3-pointer of the game to give ASU a 29-23 lead with 5:38 on the clock. Moments later, Talkington hit his third 3-pointer and the Rams were out to a 32-23 lead before Woolridge hit his second 3-pointer to push the lead to 37-27. Woolridge took the halftime margin to 14 by hitting three free throws with six seconds remaining in the first half. Â
The Rams finished the first half shooting 57.7 percent from the field and limited the Aggies to 40 percent. ASU was 50 percent from beyond the arc, hitting 5 of 10 attempts and also had a 17-10 rebounding advantage in the first half. Foster led CU with 14 points in the first half with Robinson adding seven points and two assists.
