STEPHENVILLE – The Angelo State women's basketball team fell to No. 15 Tarleton State, 74-56, at Wisdom Gym in Stephenville on Wednesday evening.
"I thought overall we came out and played pretty well for 35 minutes, but what hurts us is when we take plays off," ASU head coach
Cayla Petree said after the game. "We have to play the full 40 minutes. Our bench made some good plays tonight and gave us a lift."
The Belles (7-5, 1-1 LSC) shot 44-percent in the first half but struggled in the second half to 29.6-percent from the field. The TexAnns hit 44-percent in the first half and an effective 51.9-percent in the second half. Â Â TSU out rebounded the Belles 33-30 and forced 11 Belle turnovers.
Tarleton State started the game on a quick 5-0 run with a three pointer and a layup. A free throw by
Hillari Adam stopped the opening run. The two teams traded baskets until
Kayla Turner hit a three pointer to spark a 7-2 run. A
Rochelle Norris jumper capped the run and cut the TexAnns lead to 17-16.
Two Adam free throws gave the Belles their first lead of the game at 21-20 with 7:57 to play in the first half. ASU would take a five-point lead at 31-26 on two Amana Weaver free throws but Tarleton State would end the half on a 7-0 run to take a 33-31 halftime advantage.
The TexAnns came out in the second half on fire. A 13-4 Tarleton State run to open half pushed the lead to 46-36. The TexAnns continued its hot shooting hitting 72.7-percent from the field and 75-percent from behind the arc through the first nine minutes of the second half. The Belles struggled hitting only 23.5-percent of their shots in the second half from the field.
The Belles were led by a career high 13 points by
Tatiana Haynes.
Hillari Adam added 11 points and five rebounds on the night.
Tarleton State had three score in double figures. Kathy Thomas and Kiara Wright both scored 20 points and Brianna Bledsoe chipped in 14. Wright had a game-high 15 rebounds.
The Belles return to Stephens Arena at the Junell Center on Saturday at 2 p.m. for a LSC matchup with Texas Woman's.Â
