COMMERCE – Angelo State and No. 23-ranked Texas A&M-Commerce will meet for the fourth time this season at 1 p.m. on Sunday in the NCAA Division II South Central tournament at the Lion Soccer Field with a trip to the third round of the NCAA Division II soccer tournament on the line.
The Rambelles (16-4-1) enter the second round of the NCAA tournament having outscored their opponents 50-14 this season and with a program record 13 shutouts after knocking off No. 13-ranked Metro State 2-0 on Friday. ASU, which is averaging 2.3 goals per game, is in the second round of the national postseason for the first time in its 20-year program history and has won six of its last seven games. The Lions (15-5) received a first-round bye and enter Sunday's game on a seven-game winning streak which included beating ASU 3-2 last Sunday in the Lone Star Conference Championship finals.
On the other side of the NCAA DII South Central region, St. Edward's and Colorado School of Mines will play on Sunday. The two winners will meet next week in the third round at the highest seed's home field. Â Â
Sierra Anderson, who scored the second goal in ASU's win against Metro State with five seconds remaining in the game, leads the Rambelles with 15 goals this season. Anderson was named the LSC Co-Offensive Player of the Year, has recorded one hat trick and has three two-goal games for ASU this season. A junior, she has scored 24 goals in her career and is now second all-time in single-season goals with her 15 goals this season. She is only behind Dorothy May who scored 22 goals in the 1998 season for the Rambelles, but currently holds the season-season record with 1.33 goals per game.
Haley Mendel leads the team with six assists and has seven goals in her sophomore season, while
Tiffany Dang has five assists and scored the second goal of her season on Friday with a 12th minute goal against Metro State. Mendel was an LSC first-team selection, while midfielder
Kathleen Keoughan was an honorable mention selection after producing two goals and two assists.
Loni Byers has added four goals and four assists in her freshman season, while
Cynthia Andrews has three assists and two goals in her sophomore season. Andrews recorded the third assist of her season on Friday when she headed the ball into goal and forced the Metro State goalkeeper to make a save which was deflected to Dang who gathered it and put it in the back of the net.
Brianne Brown and
Selena Alvarez have three goals each this season with both players scoring goals last Sunday against A&M-Commerce in the LSC Championship final. Brown has two assists and Alvarez one.
ASU's defense has allowed only 98 shots on goal with strong defensive play throughout the season by

Shantel Wittke. Exford was named the LSC Co-Defensive Player of the Year, while Wittke earned LSC Goalkeeper of the Year. With her shutout on Friday, Wittke established a new program record with 10 shutouts in goal. She has made 77 saves this season and has a 14-4-1 record coming into Sunday's game.
The Lions are 7-3 this season on their home field, including a 1-0 win over ASU in the regular season and the 3-2 win last Sunday. The region's second seed, A&M-Commerce has outscored its opponents 35-15 overall this season. The team has a 19-3 goal advantage in the first half and a 14-11 advantage in the second half of games.
Savannah Henderson leads A&M-Commerce with 13 goals and has added seven assists, while Jade Bell has scored 10 goals and has eight assists. Bell was last weekend's LSC tournament MVP. Anitra Wright, Julia Hernandez and Madison Cordts have added two goals each for the Lions. Courtnie Northern leads the Lions in goal with seven shutouts, 99 saves and a 13-5 record as the team's goalkeeper. Â
