BOX SCORE: Texas A&M-Kingsville 79, Angelo State 69
SAN ANGELO – Texas A&M-Kingsville went 10-for-13 on 3-pointers and limited Angelo State to 39 percent shooting in a 79-69 Lone Star Conference win over the Rams on Saturday at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
ASU (14-5, 4-3 LSC) lost for the first time this season at home, snapping a nine-game winning streak in San Angelo to start the season. The Rams never led in the game after the Javelinas (7-12, 2-5 LSC) opened the game with two 3-pointers from Jordan Jahr and Irvin Hollinger.
"I give all the credit to Texas A&M-Kingsville today," ASU head coach
Chris Beard said. "They were better than us offensively and defensively. They had a better team enthusiasm and they just played better than we did. When a team goes 10 of 13 from the 3-point line, it's going to be a hard game to win, but even more than their shooting they just play a great game."
Bryan Hammond led the Rams with a season-high 20 points and also had five assists. Twelve of Hammond's 20 points came in the final minute of play as he hit five free throws, a 3-pointer and two jumpers to try and get ASU back into the game.
Kenny Williams added 12 points and three rebounds, while
Omari Gudul had 11 points and five rebounds for the Rams.
ASU was limited to 24 percent shooting at halftime and trailed 35-22 after the first 20 minutes of play. The Javelinas got out to the 13-point advantage with six 3-pointers in the first half and finished the game shooting 52.4 percent from the field and 76.9 percent from beyond the arc.
Ta'Quan McDew led the Javelinas with 20 points, including hitting three 3-pointers and knocking down 11 shots from the free-throw line. Jahr also had three 3-pointers in the game and finished with 16 points, while Irvin Hollinger had four 3-pointers and had 15 points. Rashad Basey, who came into the game scoring over 17 points per game, added 15 points and five rebounds.
Justin Walling brought the Rams to within 10 at 61-51 and Chantz Chamber cut it to 61-53 with a jumper with 3:07 remaining, but the Javelinas wouldn't let the game get any closer down the stretch. The Rams rebounded from their 24 percent first-half shooting by going 50 percent in the second half, including hitting four of their five 3-pointers.
Tommy Woolridge added seven points and led the team with seven rebounds, while Chambers finished the game with six points.
Angelo State returns to action at 8 p.m. against West Texas A&M in Canyon Wednesday before hosting Eastern New Mexico next Saturday at the Junell Center.
