Rams, Lions set for Lone Star Conference clash on Saturday in Commerce

SAN ANGELO – Winners of four of its last six games, the Angelo State men's basketball team returns to action at 4 p.m. on Saturday against Texas A&M-Commerce in a Lone Star Conference game at The Field House in Commerce.

ASU (16-6, 6-4 LSC) is currently tied with Eastern New Mexico for third place in the conference standings with four regular-season games remaining and enter Commerce with a 6-4 record away from San Angelo. The Lions (14-8, 3-7 LSC) are tied with Cameron in the conference standings behind the Rams and Greyhounds after they fell on Thursday at Texas A&M-Kingsville. ASU won the first meeting with a 67-65 win over the Lions at the Junell Center.

Texas A&M-Commerce is 7-1 at home this season and 3-1 in LSC play at The Field House. A&M-Commerce has a 43-42 all-time advantage over the Rams with ASU having the opportunity to square the historical series on Saturday. Angelo State won the first ever meeting between the two teams, 82-72, on Jan. 10, 1970 in a game played in Commerce.

UP NEXT: The Rams will have three games remaining on their regular-season schedule after Saturday with a midweek road trip to Wichita Falls on Wednesday to face Midwestern State at 7:30 p.m. at the D.L. Ligon Coliseum. ASU will host its Senior Day on Saturday, Feb. 22 against Cameron at the Junell Center before traveling to Kingsville to face the Javelinas on Saturday, March 1 in its regular-season finale.  
 
ASU, A&M-COMMERCE Round 1: The Rams secured a 67-65 win over the Lions back on Jan. 12 when Bryan Hammond hit a layup with four seconds remaining and A&M-Commerce missed a last-chance layup at the buzzer in the Junell Center. The game, which was televised on CSN Houston, saw the Rams up 40-26 at halftime before the Lions stormed back in the second half. Kenny Williams led the Rams with 21 points and eight rebounds, while Hammond finished with 15 points, Thomas Brandsma had 11 points on three 3-pointers and Ryan Marsh provided four blocked shots. Devondrick Walker finished the game with 19 points for the Lions with Tyrie Wooten at 15 points. ASU shot 36.7 percent in the game with A&M-Commerce at 34.5 percent. ASU, which hit seven 3-pointers, had a 45-33 rebounding advantage in the game and improved to 11-3 with the win. Commerce was 12-3 after the loss.  
 
ANGELO STATE RAM REPORT (16-6, 6-4 LSC)
Angelo State is coming off a loss at home to No. 4 Tarleton State on Wednesday and will look for a regular-season series sweep of the Lions on Saturday. ASU has only lost back-to-back games once this season and have yet to do so in conference play. The Rams are averaging 74.6 points per game this season and have limited their opponents to 69.1 points per game.

ASU is shooting 47.8 percent from the field, 34 percent on 3-pointers (106 of 312) and 66.7 percent from the free-throw line (384 of 576). The Rams are second in the conference by limiting opponents to 40.2 percent shooting from the field and have outrebounded opponents 569-481 throughout the season. Their plus-4.5 rebounding margin per game is second in the LSC along with their shooting percentage and total team assists.

The Rams have experienced a resurgence this season after going 7-19 last season with these accomplishments already on record: The Angelo State basketball team started the season with a 10-0 record for the first time in program history. The previous best start to a season was 7-0 in the 1981-82, 1993-94 and 2008-09 seasons… Along with the best start to a season, the 10-0 record also provided the first 10-game winning streak at any point in a season at Angelo State. The 10-game winning streak surpassed the previous program records of nine-game streaks in the 1987-88 and 2000-01 seasons… Angelo State was ranked No. 22 in the nation after its strong start to the season, finding itself in the national polls for the first time in five seasons. Angelo State has now been nationally ranked 10 times in program history. ASU's 1983-84 team was ranked five times throughout its season and maintains the highest ranking in program history at No. 13 in the Jan. 16, 1984 poll. ASU was ranked once in the 2000-01 and 2001-02 seasons at No. 25, but dropped out the next week and were unable to get back into the rankings. The 2008-09 Rams were in the polls twice in their season, first at No. 25 on Dec. 16, 2008 and then No. 23 on Feb. 24, 2009.
 
RAM RUNDOWN
Bryan Hammond is coming off a 21 points, four assists game against Tarleton State on Wednesday. He has now scored 20 or more points in three of the last four games and is averaging 13.5 points per game in LSC play. A senior from New Orleans, he leads Angelo State with 97 assists this season and is second on the team with 11.4 points per game throughout the season. He scored 20 points against Texas A&M-Kingsville and West Texas A&M earlier this month before dropping his season-high of 21 on Wednesday. He  is fifth in the LSC with 4.4 assists per game. Hammond, who leads ASU by shooting 76.1 percent on free-throws (70 of 92) has scored in double digits 12 times this season. His season highlight came when he hit the game-winner against A&M-Commerce with four seconds remaining in the game and his 20 points and he had eight assists against McMurry and Cameron. A transfer from Nicholls State, he is in his second season at Angelo State along with teammate Chris Talkington. Hammond has averaged 10.3 points per game and has 173 assists through 48 games played at ASU. He established a career-high in points last season by scoring 26 in a game at Incarnate Word.

Kenny Williams continues to lead the Rams and the Lone Star Conference with 17.7 points per game, 6.7 defensive rebounds per game and nine double-doubles. Williams is coming off a 14 points, 12 rebound performance against Tarleton State to secure his conference-leading ninth double-double. He has scored in double digits in 21 of 22 games this season and has score 20 or more points 10 times this season. In LSC play, the senior from St. Louis is averaging 17.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game. His overall rebounding average is second in the conference and he leads ASU with 19 blocked shots. He also leads ASU with 29 steals this season and is shooting 47.3 percent from the field. He scored a season-high 28 points in the season-opener against East Central and grabbed a season-high 15 rebounds against ENMU in an overtime game in Portles, N.M. Williams has been selected as one of the top under-the-radar dunkers in the nation by College Slam. Voting is open for the first round of the online competition with fans voting once a day for their favorite dunker. Fans can go to www.facebook.com/CollegeSlam to vote. The winner of the bracket-style competition advances to compete in the national slam dunk contest at the NCAA Final Four in Dallas on April 3rd. The dunk contest will be aired on ESPN.

Tommy Woolridge leads the Rams with 32 3-pointers this season and is averaging 9.1 points per game. A Chicago native, he's a two-time LSC Offensive Player of the Week and has scored in double digits nine times this season. He went for a season-high 32 points at Cameron for the most points by a Ram this season when he went 6-for-6 from beyond the arc. He has also contributed 25 assists and 19 steals in his first year at ASU.  Daniel Skinner, a junior from Dallas also in his first year at ASU, is averaging 4.9 rebounds per game and 7.4 points per game. He is second on the team with 107 total rebounds and has 14 games of five or more rebounds this season. Skinner secured six rebounds last Saturday against ENMU and recorded a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds earlier this season against York College. He has 4.2 rebounds per game in conference play.

Omari Gudul recorded his second double-double of the season last Saturday after he went for 14 points and 10 rebounds against ENMU, but was held scoreless on Wednesday against Tarleton State. A sophomore from the Congo, Gudul is in his first season at ASU after playing last season at Ranger College. He is averaging 4.6 points and 4.0 rebounds this season and has also contributed eight blocked shots. He had a season-high two blocked shots against ENMU to go along with his season-high 14 points. His first double-double of his career came in a 13 point, 12-rebound performance against York College on Nov. 16. Gudul has eight games of five rebounds or more. Fellow sophomores Reggie Sutton and Thomas Brandsma have added depth and contributions for the Rams all season. Sutton scored eight points against ENMU last Saturday, but was scoreless against Tarleton. Sutton is averaging 5.0 points and 2.5 rebounds per game, while Brandsma is at 3.4 points and 2.7 rebounds per game.

Chris Talkington, a senior from Grand Prairie who transferred to ASU after playing his first two seasons at Nicholls State with Hammond, is second on the team with 23 3-pointers this season. He's averaging 7.4 points and 2.5 rebounds per game after scoring 11 points and grabbing seven rebounds against the Texans. He has scored in double digits in eight games this season and is shooting 43.4 percent on 3-pointers (23 of 53). Talkington is a 9.2 point per game scorer through 42 games in his career at ASU after averaging 10.7 points per game last season as a junior. He has hit 66 3-pointers in a Ram uniform. Chantz Chambers is adding 5.1 points and 1.5 rebounds per game as a freshman. Chambers, who will also compete in the long jump for the ASU Track & Field team, has scored in double digits four times this season and is coming off scoring seven points against Tarleton State in 13 minutes of play. His season-high came in a 13-point effort against Northern New Mexico on Nov. 22. Chambers has played 19 games, all as a reserve and is shooting 39.3 percent on 3-pointers (11 of 28).

Ryan Marsh is second on the team with 17 blocked shots this season and is averaging 2.2 points per game. A senior from Burleson, Marsh played his first two collegiate seasons at Dallas Baptist. He has 43 career blocked shots after leading the Rams with 26 last season. He had a career-high six blocks last season against Lubbock Christian and had four blocks in the first meeting this season against Texas A&M-Commerce and had three blocked shots against West Texas A&M.
 
TEXAS A&M-COMMERCE REPORT (14-8, 3-7 LSC)
The Lions comes into Saturday's game on a two-game losing streak after taking a 75-74 loss on Thursday at Texas A&M-Kingsville and dropping a 75-63 decision last Saturday at Midwestern State. A&M-Commerce has lost six of its last eight games, a decline from a strong early season record that started on Jan. 12 in San Angelo. The Lions lead the conference by making 463 free throws and with 96 blocked shots.

The Lions are averaging 81.4 points per game throughout the season, but are averaging 74.0 points per game in conference play. The team is shooting 43 percent in LSC games, while opponents are at 42 percent. Commerce is averaging 36 percent shooting from beyond the arc (165 for 448) this season and 74 percent from the free-throw line (463 for 626).
LaDon Carnegie leads the Lions this season with 14.6 points per game and is adding 5.7 rebounds per game. Carnegie, a junior guard from Michigan, is averaging 14.0 points per game in conference play and has also contributed 37 assists and 23 steals this season. He is shooting 50.6 percent from the field and 52.8 percent on 3-pointers (28 of 53). Carnegie missed the first meeting of the season against ASU with an injury.

Devondrick Walker is averaging 12.9 points and 3.5 rebounds per game for the Lions. A senior from Garland, he led the team with 17 points and eight rebounds on Thursday at Kingsville and is shooting 47.2 percent from the field this season. He has also provided 25 assists and 11 steals. Tyrie Wooten is also averaging in double figures with 11.7 points per game in his senior season. A Michigan native, Wooten has also provided 55 assists and 24 steals for the Lions. Kameron Price leads A&M-Commerce with 57 assists and is also averaging 9.3 points and 4.0 rebounds per game. Christian Macauley scored nine points and 11 rebounds on Thursday at Kingsville and is averaging 9.5 points and leads the team with 7.4 rebounds per game this season. Macauley is a 6-foot-9 junior from Washington, D.C. who is shooting 53.1 percent from the field and has 63 blocked shots. His blocked shot total leads the conference and is fifth in all of Division II.

Kenny Brown is adding 7.2 points and 5.2 rebounds per game in his senior season out of Mississippi, while De'Andre Carson is scoring 6.7 points per game and has also provided 46 assists this season. Carson is a freshman from Kyle who has started five games and played in 19.

Texas A&M-Commerce will host Eastern New Mexico on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at The Field House before wrapping up its season with a road game at West Texas A&M and then hosting Tarleton State in its finale.
