Rams earn 70-59 LSC win over Cameron in final game at the Junell Center

SAN ANGELO – Angelo State seniors were honored on Saturday, but more importantly, they led.

Bryan Hammond topped the Rams with 21 points and Kenny Williams recorded his 10th double-double of the season to help lead ASU to a 70-59 Lone Star Conference win over Cameron in the final home game of the season at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center. The Rams finished the 2013-14 regular season with an 11-2 record at home and will complete their regular season next Saturday at Texas A&M-Kingsville.

"We played good defense tonight as a team," ASU head coach Chris Beard said. "Cameron is very talented. They are hard to guard. Our guys executed the scoring report. Will Cook is a very good scorer and he earned his 29 points."

Williams finished the game with 13 points and 12 rebounds, while Chris Talkington added 14 points and five rebounds for the Rams (17-8, 7-6 LSC). Hammond matched his season-high in points and also contributed five rebounds and three assists in his final home game.

"I respect these six seniors," Beard said. "They have been fun to coach. Hopefully we have a lot of basketball left together. They are all good players, but more importantly they are good people. They will be winners in life."

ASU led 25-23 at halftime after jumping out to a 17-4 lead on the Aggies (11-13, 5-8 LSC) 11 minutes into the game. Cameron responded with a 10-0 run before going on 7-2 run to close out the half. The Rams were limited to 37 percent shooting in the first half, but pulled away in the second half by shooting 52.4 percent from the field and hitting 20 of 24 free throws.

The Rams opened the second half on a 15-7 run which was capped by a pair of free throws by Williams and took the score to 40-30 with 16:34 remaining in the game. ASU led 47-34 with 13:32 to play when Talkington hit a 3-pointer and it led 58-43 on a pair of Nash Nelson free throws with eight minutes remaining. Cameron never went away, but a jumper by Williams took it to 64-56 with 1:23 on the clock and two free throws by Hammond increased the lead to double digits at 67-56 with one minute to play.

Angelo State had a 46-30 rebounding advantage in the game, including grabbing 15 offensive boards and turning them into eight second-chance points. The Rams scored 19 points off 15 Aggie turnovers and had a 26-20 advantage in points in the paint. The Rams finished the game 22-for-29 at the free-throw line (75.9 percent) with Hammond going 7-for-9, Talkington 6-for-6  and Tommy Woolridge hitting 3 of 4 to lead the way.

Seniors Ryan Marsh, Ice Asortse, Zach Jones, Williams, Talkington and Hammond were honored after the game. Williams currently leads the Rams with 17.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, while Hammond is averaging 11.8 points per game and leads the team with 117 assists. Hammond has scored over 20 points in four of his last eight games.

Will Cook led the Aggies with 29 points and six rebounds, while Craig Foster was limited to eight points and four assist by the Ram defense. CU shot 33.3 percent in the Junell Center on Saturday and went 15-for-21 from the free-throw line.
