No. 20 Rams fall 3-2 to No. 5 Rattlers at Dickson Stadium in San Antonio

SAN ANTONIO – The No. 20-ranked Angelo State baseball team will enter Lone Star Conference play with a 10-3 overall record after falling 3-2 on Tuesday to No. 5 St. Mary's in a game which ended on an error to score the winning run for the Rattlers at Dickson Stadium.

"It was really just a few bounces of the ball that went against us that cost us tonight," ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. "There were some bad breaks, but we also didn't do what we needed to do in a couple of situations that could have changed the game too. I think we're two teams that are good enough to play again in the postseason"

ASU tied the game at 2-2 in the top of the eighth inning on an error as well, when David Goggin singled to right field and got caught up in a rundown with Cameron Massengill on third base. Massengill would dart home and would score on an errant throw. Brett David provided the first Angelo State run of the game with a two-out single through the left side of the infield to score Coughenour who had reached base with a leadoff hit-by-pitch. The Rams would go scoreless for the next six innings though before Massengill's run.

St. Mary's would get a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth from Al Gonzalez to right field and he would move to second on a sacrifice bunt. Adrian Garcia pulled a pitch to the right side of the infield and would see Coughenour track it down but pull David off first base. The ball went past David to allow Gonzalez to score the game-winning run.

Angelo State received two solid pitching performances from starter Dillon Becker and reliever Graylon Brown. Becker did not allow a hit until the fourth inning and finished with two strikeouts and allowing four hits in 4.0 innings of work. Brown (0-1) would strikeout four in 4.1 innings of work, including working out of trouble in the eighth inning with a runner at third base. He received the loss in the game after the unearned run scored in the ninth.

"Becker in his first college start did a great job for us and Graylon threw great as well," Brooks said. "That's great to see going into conference play this weekend. We have to have guys step up for us this season and they both did that for us in this game."

The Rams finished the game with nine hits, including getting two hits from Nehwon Norkeh, Derek Tyner and Massengill who went 2-for-3. David had the only RBI of the game for ASU and finished the game 1-for-4. Hunter Choate added the other hit for the Rams. Coughenour, who led the game off with a walk, went 0-for-2 in the game to snap an 11-game hitting streak to start the season and Christian Summers went 0-for-4 to stop a seven-game hitting streak.

Joe Hermsen led the Rattlers at the plate, going 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Gonzalez went 1-for-2 with his only hit setting up the walk-off win. Garcia (2-0) earned the win after recording the final two outs for the Rattlers in the top of the ninth inning. Mario Maldonado did not receive a decision after striking out three and scattering nine hits in 8.1 innings of work in the start.

ASU will start LSC play this weekend against Cameron in Lawton, Okla. with a four-game series starting on Friday. The Rams are currently ranked No. 20 in the NCBWA poll and No. 26 by CollegeBaseballLineup.com. The Rattlers moved up to No. 5 in the NCBWA poll which was released on Tuesday night.
