BOX SCORE: Angelo State 77, Eastern New Mexico 75
SAN ANGELO – Omari Gudul and
Kenny Williams both delivered double-doubles to help lead the Angelo State men's basketball team to a 77-75 Lone Star Conference win over Eastern New Mexico on Saturday at Stephens Arena in the Junell Center.
Williams produced his eighth double-double of the season with 22 points and 10 rebounds, while Gudul had his second double-double after contributing 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Rams (16-5, 6-3 LSC) who improved to 10-1 at home with the victory over the Greyhounds (12-9, 5-4 LSC). ASU, which had a 48-12 scoring advantage in the paint, made 21 of 31 free throws in the game and survived a 3-point exhibition by ENMU which hit 11 3-pointers on 26 attempts (42 percent). The victory by the Rams evened the regular-season series between the two teams after ENMU had taken a 72-68 overtime win on Jan. 18 in Portales, N.M.
"We played a good game today with the exception of one stat, turnovers," ASU head coach
Chris Beard said. "To win a college game against a quality opponent like ENMU with 24 turnovers is hard to explain. Give credit to our team defense. We won today with our defense."
ASU moved into sole possession of third place in the LSC standings and will now host No. 2 Tarleton State (8-1 LSC) on Wednesday at the Junell Center.
The Rams led 40-38 at halftime and trailed only once in the second half when Devone Davis hit a 3-pointer with 10:49 remaining in the game. ASU responded with an 8-0 run with two jumpers and two free throws from Williams and a jumper from
Chantz Chambers.
Reggie Sutton threw down a left-handed dunk to give the Rams a 63-56 lead with 8:41 to play, but the game remained close with Rafael Love bringing the Greyhounds to within two at 63-61 with a pair of free throws with seven minutes on the clock.
ASU used another run, this time an 5-1 string of points to regain momentum and took a 70-64 advantage when Williams hit a jumper and then an eight-point lead with a Gudul shot a minute later. ENMU wasn't going away though and a Rodney Blackmon 3-pointer made it 74-73 with 1:54 to play and it was 75-74 when Davis hit the backend of a pair of free throws for ENMU.
Thomas Brandsma added to ASU's lead and pushed the game to 77-74 with a layup with 1:22 to play and a missed 3-pointer by Blackmon with four seconds remaining ended the game.
Bryan Hammond added 11 points and led the Rams with four assists in the game, while Sutton finished with eight points and
Tommy Woolridge and Chambers each had five points.
Daniel Skinner contributed six rebounds and four points for the Rams who shot 54.9 percent from the field with only three of their 51 shots coming from beyond the arc. ASU went 0-for-3 on 3-pointers in the game, but outscored ENMU 48-12 inside the paint. Gudul established a career-high with his 14 points after his previous high was 13 points and 12 rebounds in his double-double earlier this season against York College.
"Omari had a solid game," Beard said. "We will need him to produce like this for the remainder of the season if we are going to be competitive. Omari works at his game. He invests time. He wants to be good. It was nice to see him play well today. I believe in Omari and feel fortunate to be his coach."
Blackmon finished with a game-high 24 points, while Rafael Love added 14 points and Davis had 13 for the Greyhounds who saw a two-game conference win streak snapped with the loss.
The Rams trailed by four points five times in the first half, but never by more and took a three-point halftime lead after Hammond hit a buzzer-beating shot just inside the arc to cap a 10-4 run to end the half by ASU. The Rams finished the first half shooting 52.2 percent from the field and hit 16 of 20 free throws. The Greyhounds were 11 of 13 from the free-throw line and shot 58.5 percent. ENMU did its damage from beyond the arch, hitting 7 of 12 while the Rams made only one 3-pointer.
Hammond led ASU with seven points at halftime with Williams at seven points and three rebounds after the first 20 minutes of play. Skinner had four rebounds and four assists, while ENMU's Blackmon had a half-high 16 point for the Greyhounds.
