No. 20 Rams earn doubleheader sweep of Aggies, take three of four in LSC series

G2 BOX SCORE: Angelo State 8, Cameron 6

LAWTON, Okla. – The Angelo State baseball team scored three runs in the top of the ninth inning to earn an 8-6 win following a 2-1 victory over Cameron in the first game of a Lone Star Conference doubleheader on Saturday at McCord Field.

ASU (13-4, 3-1 LSC) took three of four from the Aggies (6-8, 1-3 LSC) in the series to start LSC play and will now host Tarleton State next weekend in a four-game series at Foster Field. Blake Bass earned the win in the opener after striking out six in a complete-game victory, while Graylon Brown (1-1) secured the win in the second game after going 4.0 innings of relief where he allowed only one hit.

"More than anything, I was really proud of the way we came out and competed today," ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. "It was good to find a way to win the second game. We've done it a couple of times this season and have shown a good tendency of not giving up throughout the season. That's a good trait to have as a team. It was miserable conditions up here, but we showed a lot of mental toughness throughout the games."

The Rams, down 6-5 going into the final inning of the series, got things going early with a pinch-hit single from JP Zapata and were sitting with runners at first and third and no outs after Tyler Coughenour reached on an error. Zapata tied the game at six when he scored on a passed ball and the Rams took the lead when Coughenour scored when Derek Tyner drove him in with a ground out to the shortstop. Brett David added the third run of the game with a single to score Nehwon Norkeh who reached on an infield single.

ASU led the game 5-0 going into the bottom of the fourth inning after Coughenour delivered a two-run double to right field, but Cameron responded with three runs in the fourth and fifth inning to take the lead.

Coughenour finished the game 2-for-3 with two RBI, while David went 2-for-3 with two walks and David Goggin went 2-for-5. Brown recorded two strikeouts, didn't walk a batter and allowed only one hit in his four innings of relief. Jake Albert made his first start of the season, going 3.2 innings with one strikeout and three earned runs in the no-decision.

Bass (1-0) earned his first win as a Ram after striking out six and scattering four Cameron hits in the first game of the day. It was his second start and third appearance this season and was the second complete-game for ASU this season after Jason Zgardowski had a complete-game last weekend against Colorado School of Mines.

"We needed to have an extended start from him after playing so many games this week," Brooks said. "With this series being moved up, it was not in our bull pen's favor. It was big for him to have a start like that for us. I felt like he was in control the whole time and it was good for him to battle through some tough innings when we made some errors. I think this game will make him a better pitcher as the season goes on."

The Rams took an early 1-0 lead on a double steal when Nehwon Norkeh scored from third after reaching base by being hit by a pitch and then moving to third on a Derek Tyner one-out single. Tyner would get caught up in a rundown and Norkeh raced home for the run. ASU tacked on the game-winning run in the fifth inning with two outs. Hunter Choate had a one-out single up the middle of the Aggie defense and would score when Tyler Coughenour singled through the left side of the infield.

Cameron would score its lone run of the game in the bottom of the sixth inning after the Rams committed two errors. Bass would work through trouble and strand two runners on base. The Aggies left seven runners on base in the game, including Bass getting out of a bases-loaded jam in the first inning with his second strikeout of the frame.

Coughenour finished the game 1-for-3 with an RBI from the leadoff spot of the lineup, while Norkeh, Tyner, Brett David and Choate also had hits for the Rams. Norkeh also had a stolen base in the game for his eighth of the season. Choate's hit extended his hitting streak to six games and Tyner's single took his streak to five.
