SAN ANGELO – Angelo State senior
Kenny Williams has been named to the Daktronics NCAA Division II All-South Central first team after leading the Rams with 17.2 points and 8.0 rebounds per game this season.
Williams, a 6-foot-7 forward from St. Louis, recorded 10 double-doubles for ASU and scored in double digits in 26 of 28 games played. He was named to the Lone Star Conference first team and earned its Newcomer of the Year honor after finishing the regular season as its scoring leader and second in rebounding.
"
Kenny Williams helped our team be immediately competitive in our first season with his talent and competitiveness," ASU head coach
Chris Beard said. "He was also an under-rated defensive player with the ability to guard different positions. We will miss Kenny's production."
Williams was joined on the Daktronics NCAA DII All-South Central team by Brandon Jefferson (Metro State), Chuck Guy (Tarleton State), Derrick White (UC-Colorado Springs) and Alex Herrera (Fort Lewis College). Jefferson, who is a 5-foot-9 senior from Flower Mound, was named the Daktronics South Central region player of the year after scoring 20.9 points per game this season for the Roadrunners.
His stellar season included scoring a season-high 28 points in the season-opener against East Central and securing a season-high 15 rebounds against Eastern New Mexico. He scored 21 points and had nine rebounds against Cameron in the LSC Championships quarterfinals and had five or more rebounds in 23 games. His double-doubles came against ECU (28/10), York (27/11), Western New Mexico (12/10), McMurry (16/12), Arkansas-Fort Smith (22/13), Tarleton (25/10), ENMU (23/15), ENMU (22/10), Tarleton (14/12) and Cameron (13/12). He also earned one LSC Offensive Player of the Week honor this season and two LSC Defensive Player of the Week awards.
Williams is the first Ram to earn an all-region honor since LaMarshall Corbett was named to the Daktronics All-South Central Region first-team in 2010 and Marcus Hubbard was tabbed an all-region performer in 2007. After earning first-team all-region, Williams now advances onto the Daktronics All-America ballot. Corbett (2010) and Ed Wheeler (1993) are the only two Rams to have earned All-America status in ASU history. His 10 double-doubles this season ranks fourth for the most in a season and were the most since Hubbard had 11 in the 2005-06 season.
Along with his individual success, Williams helped lead the Rams to a 19-9 record which was their first winning season in four years and to their first postseason win since 2001. ASU started the season 10-0 for the first time in program history, was nationally ranked for the first time since 2008-09 and advanced to the postseason for the first time since 2010.
Monzaigo Williams (Midwestern), De'Andre Upchurch (Tarleton), Mitch McCarron (Metro), Jake Toupal (Arkansas-Fort Smith) and Trevor Wages (Colorado Mines) were named to the South Central second team.
