Rams earn two walk-off wins over ENMU to take 3-0 LSC series lead

G2 BOX SCORE: Angelo State 9, ENMU 8 (12 innings)

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State baseball team earned two walk-off wins over Eastern New Mexico to sweep a doubleheader on Saturday after Derek Tyner delivered a two-run single with two outs in the bottom of the 12th inning to lift the Rams to a 9-8 win in the second game following Brett David slashing a single which got lost in the sun for the game-winner in a 2-1 victory.

ASU (20-12, 10-9 LSC) is now 10-6 in one-run games this season with the pair of wins and lead the series 3-0 over the Greyhounds (15-16, 5-14 LSC).

"I've talked throughout the season about how much I believe in the character of these guys and they're showing that this weekend," ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. "We were down to our last out twice, down three and we never gave up."

ASU and ENMU will complete the tightly-contested four-game series at 1 p.m. on Sunday at Foster Field.

The second win of the day seemed improbable on multiple occasions. The Rams trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth before Reggie Rodriguez hit a three-run home run to left field. ENMU tied the game in the top of the seventh to force extra innings and took a 7-4 lead into the bottom of the ninth after scoring three unearned runs.

"The energy was great and everyone was there to pick everyone up when we needed it," Rodriguez said. "In a game like that you have to have everyone believing you can get it done."

After two quick outs in the ninth, Cameron Massengill walked and Hunter Choate singled through the left side of the infield. David then stepped up and delivered the second three-run home run of the game for ASU on the first pitch he saw to tie the game once again. Scoreless innings followed in the 10th and 11th, including JP Zapata making a run-scoring diving catch to end the 10th before the Greyhounds once again took the lead and had the bases loaded with one out in the 12th. Erik Monson came into pitch and got a great play from Christian Summers to get the force out at home and then coaxed a weak lineout to Summers at third to strand the bases loaded and minimize the damage. Once again, two quick ASU outs in the bottom of the 12th set ENMU up to close out the game. David Goggin worked a two-out walk and Summers then singled. Both runners would move into scoring position on a wild pitch and set Tyner up for the dramatics. On a 2-1 count, Tyner drilled a fastball by the pitcher and Goggin and Summers raced around the bases to win the game.

"We did a good job of staying level with our approaches regardless of the situation throughout the game," Tyner said. "There were moments when we definitely felt like we were in trouble, but we weren't going to give up."

The three-run home runs were the first homers of the season for David and Rodriguez.

Monson (1-0) earned his first collegiate win in the game after recording the final two outs in the 12th. ASU used six pitchers in the game, including starter Blake Bass who went 3.0 innings with two strikeouts, no walks and gave up only one earned run. Graylon Brown also went 3.0 innings and had three strikeouts and saw two unearned runs score. In his second outing on the mound, Summers shined with a career-high seven strikeouts – also in 3.0 innings of relief, while Jake Albert provided 2.1 innings with only one earned run.

"I can't say enough about the effort from all of our guys tonight," Brooks said. "We couldn't have asked for more effort and determination from the entire team."

The Rams, who survived a five-error game in the win and improved to 2-5 in extra-inning games, had 13 hits in the game with Rodriguez, Summers, David and Massengill having two hits each. ENMU had 14 hits in the game and no errors, but stranded 16 runners to ASU's 14.

Jason Zgardowski (3-2) earned the win in the first game, striking out a career-high 11 and scattering four hits in his fourth complete game of the season. The Rams did not commit an error behind Zgardowski in the game. Tyner led the Rams at the plate in the game, going 2-for-3 to account for half of the ASU hits with Bass and Summers having one hit each.

Tyner led the seventh inning off with a double to left field for the Rams and moved to third base on a Zapata sacrifice bunt. Intentional walks were delivered to Massengill and Bass to load the bases for David who hit a fly ball to right field which was lost in the setting sun by the right fielder and scored Tyner for the win.
