Rams take Lone Star Conference series from No. 6 Buffs after walk-off home run

G1 BOX SCORE: Angelo State 10, West Texas A&M 8 (8 innings)
G2 BOX SCORE: West Texas A&M 5, Angelo State 1

SAN ANGELO – Tyler Coughenour hit a three-run walk-off home run in extra innings to lift the Angelo State baseball team to a 10-8 Lone Star Conference win in the first game of a doubleheader before No. 6 West Texas A&M claimed a 5-1 victory in the series finale to avoid a sweep by the Rams on Saturday at Foster Field.

ASU (25-19, 14-15 LSC) won the series 2-1 and finished its home schedule with a 16-8 record after the pair of games. The Rams are in third place in the LSC standings with two road series coming up at Texas A&M-Kingsville and then Eastern New Mexico, while the Buffs (31-12, 19-10 LSC) are now in second after entering the weekend tied with Texas A&M-Kingsville which took two of three from Eastern New Mexico.

"It was good to get to wins, but realistically that was the minimum to keep us afloat," ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. "I thought we played hard and continued showing the quality of character we have throughout our team. We know we can play with anybody, but we would have liked to take all three and felt like we had some opportunities that we let slip."

Coughenour's home run ended the eighth extra-inning game of the season for the Rams and came with Nehwon Norkeh on third and Cameron Massengill on first. Norkeh had reached on a fielder's choice and raced to third on Massengill singling through the left side of the infield. With one out, Coughenour turned on a pitch and drilled his fourth home run of the season on a 1-1 count.

"I knew going into the box that the pitcher uses his slider and I needed something up," Coughenour said. "It was big with Nehwon getting to third because it's a lot easier to score him from there. I knew I could just put something in the outfield to score him, so I was just looking for something up and got one and let it fly."

"You never have to worry about Tyler wanting to win," Brooks said. "He's a tremendously competitive player and did a great job there. I asked him if he wanted to bunt and he said he did not. I told him to get Nehwon in then and he did even better than that."

Coughenour finished the game 3-for-5 and score two runs in the game, while Brett David and Reggie Rodriguez each went 2-for-3. Hunter Choate provided three RBI on one hit, while JP Zapata and Christian Summers each had one hit to contribute to ASU's 13-hit game. The Rams had trailed 7-3 going into the bottom of the fifth, but would strike for four runs on four hits in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game at seven. Coughenour hit a one-out triple to get the inning's rally started, while David Goggin drove him in with a sacrifice fly. With two outs, David singled, Tyner singled and Christian Summers was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Hunter Choate drove in two with a single to left field and Summers would tie the game on a passed ball.

Graylon Brown (5-2) earned the win for the second consecutive game after recording the final out of the eighth inning. Brown got WT's Justin Hargrove to line out to Brett David at first base to end the top of the inning with the Buffs leading 8-7 after they had taken the lead on a Beto Rodriguez run-scoring triple.

ASU starter Jason Zgardowski did not receive a decision in the game after allowing five runs in four inning of work. Zgardowski, who earned the save in Friday's win, walked two and allowed five hits in his time on the mound on Saturday. Dillon Becker and Mason Leavitt combined to make three outs in relief, while senior Jake Albert held the Buffs to one run in 2 2/3 innings of relief. Albert made two appearances over the weekend and allowed only one run in 3 1/3 innings. WT's Paul Lujan (2-3) took the loss after surrendering the three-run home run to Coughenour and starter Scott Cone did not receive a decision after exiting the game in the fifth inning with a 7-5 lead. Cone had four strikeouts and three walks in the game.

The Rams could not carry the momentum from the walk-off win into a series finale victory as the Buffs took a 5-1 win in the series finale.

Jake Feckley (5-2) struck out five and walked only one, but WT was able to have 10 hits and score five runs on the all-time winningest pitcher in ASU history.

ASU would score its only run of the game with Choate hitting a sacrifice fly in the second inning to score David who tripled off the left-field wall with one out. David and Massengill each finished the game 2-for-4, while Zapata, Rodriguez and Norkeh provided one single each.

Joshua Weyker (6-4) had 11 strikeouts in eight innings of six-hit baseball to earn the win. Nick Chapman provided two RBI on a two hit game, while Justin Hargrove had a double for the Buffs.
