4-0 win over Fort Lewis College on Thursday at the Patriots Soccer Field in Dallas.BOX SCORE: Angelo State 4, Fort Lewis College 0DALLAS – Scoring four goals a game is a nice routine to develop.
Kathleen Keoughan and
Brianne Brown each scored a goal and assisted on another to help lead the Angelo State soccer team to a 4-0 non-conference win over Fort Lewis College on Thursday at the Patriot Soccer Field in a result which matched the program's best start to a season. ASU has now scored four goals in each of the team's first three games, including back-to-back 4-0 wins.
"I'm loving the number four and hopefully we can keep that going the rest of the season," ASU head coach
Travis McCorkle said. "I think the biggest key for us right now is that all of our players are just working so hard. They are forcing the other teams to turn the ball over and from those change of possessions we are getting scoring opportunities."
ASU (3-0), which is in its 20th season of playing scoring has not started a season with three straight wins since 1998, has outscored their opponents this season 12-2 and has scored four or more goals for the third straight game for the first time in program history. The scoreless result from the opposition is the second consecutive shutout for goalkeeper
Shantel Wittke who made three saves behind a team which owned an 11-9 shot advantage over the Skyhawks (1-1-1). Â
Sierra Anderson put the Rambelles on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 9th minute of play off an assist from Brown and Keoughan would follow with a free-kick goal from 30-yards out just eight minutes later. The team took that 2-0 lead into halftime, but would add to it with
Elizabeth Rodriguez scoring on a penalty kick in the 57th minute and Brown scoring in the 87th minute off an assist from Keoughan. ASU's success is coming early in games with the team outscoring its opponents 7-0 in the first half. While last season resulted in the program's first conference championship, the team was relegated to only 13 first-half goals and 27 total goals throughout its 18-game 2013 schedule.
"We really are trying to get some goals early to give us a cushion and then focus on defending," Keoughan said. "Those early goals are big for us. We are loving it right now and our team is really having fun playing soccer."
Anderson, who was hampered last weekend with an injury, returned to her scoring ways by scoring her first goal of the season against FLC and now has 10 goals in her career. Brown's assist was her second of the season and the fifth of her career, while Keoughan now has four career goals and two assists this season. Rodriguez, a freshman playing just outside of her hometown of Arlington, scored her first collegiate goal with the penalty kick strike. Â
The ASU defense limited FLC to three shots on goal in the game with constant pressure and a team mentality.
"Our midfield did a really good job of coming back on defense to help control the field for us," McCorkle said. "We did a good job of winning headers and competed well throughout the game. There were some moments where we started to bend more than we would have liked to see, but we never broke or made a critical mistake."
With goal totals of 19, 14, 12 and three 10-goal games in program history, the 12 goals are not the most in a three-game span, but the 12 goals to start this season would be the most in a three-game span without the lopsided double-digit totals of previous ASU teams. The 12-goal total is the most to start a season.Â
The Rambelles return to action at noon on Saturday against Colorado Mesa back at Dallas Baptist. A win would surpass the 1998 team's best start to a season in program history, but it would also give ASU a 4-0 in-region record so far this season which is always important when the NCAA disperses its regional bids in November.
"We want to make sure we finish the weekend of play with two wins," McCorkle said. "We have to make sure we leave this trip with another win to help ourselves out down the road."
