SAN ANGELO, Texas – The No. 4/6 Angelo State men's basketball team looks to remain undefeated as it takes on Drury University on Friday, December 18 at 11 a.m. (PST) / 1 p.m. (CST) and No. 16 Rollins University on Saturday, December 19 at 11 a.m. (PST) / 1 p.m. (CST) at the Holiday Hoops Classic in Las Vegas, Nevada.
"We are really focusing on this preparing us for the Lone Star Conference, as these two games will be just like what we will see during conference play," commented ASU head men's basketball coach Cinco Boone. "Our guys are excited about the trip and they are hungry for the competition. They are looking forward to teams that are in the top 25." Â Â
The No.4/6 Rams improved to 10-0 on the season with a pair of wins over Lubbock Christian and McMurry.  ASU is now one win away from having the best start to a season program history. The last time the program held a 10-0 starting record was in 2013-14 under then former head coach Chris Beard. Â
Angelo State's potent offense remains No. 1 spot in the Lone Star Conference and has jumped to the No. 5 nationally with 94.5 points per game. The teams scoring margin is currently averaging a 21.5 differential per game has also remained on top of the LSC and has recently moved up the ranks to No. 3 nationally. After a 27-for-28 performance from the foul line against McMurry, ASU also leads the conference with a .778 free throw percentage having sunk 228-for-293 this season.  Finally, the Rams also lead the LSC in assists per game averaging 18.1 and in steals averaging 9.4.
Tre Bennett has been the driving force behind the Rams high scoring offense. The senior point guard led the team in several categories which included points scored (28), free throws made (12-12) and assists (12). He scored a team high 19 points and was a perfect 9-for-9 from the line in ASU's last match-up. Bennett has also knocked down double-digit points in all but three games this season and is averaging 17.3 points per game thus far. His 53 assists on the year is tops on the team and in the LSC, while his 4.5 assist per game average leads the team and is third in the LSC. Bennett also added five rebounds and three steals to his overall numbers for the week.
Shelton Boykin is averaging 16.8 points per game which is second on teh team and is hitting .545 percent of his field goal. He dropped in a team leading 19 points in the Rams last game and had scored double-digit points every game that he has played in this season. The junior also lead the group in the steals department as he is averaging 1.7 steals per game. The California transfer is currently tied for first on the team with two double-doubles on the year.
Stedman Allen and Quay King have also made major contributions to ASU offense this season. Allen, who is averaging 16.1 points per game, is second on the team with a .577 field goal shooting percentage. He has scored at least 15 points in six of the nine games he has played in. Finally, King has proven to be a great asset from outside the arc for ASU. He is second on the team with 22 three pointers and is averaging 9.7 points per game.   Â
Omari Gudul has been a constant for the Angelo State defense. The senior leads the team in both rebounds and blocks. He is averaging a team high and LSC third 8.6 boards per game. Of the 8.6, 5.1 of that per game average is contributed to the defense. His 2.4 blocks per game is also tops on the team as well as third in the LSC. Offensively, the native of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is averaging 9.2 points per game and has sunk double-digits in the last two games for the Rams. Gudul is also tied for the team lead with two double-doubles on the season.  Â
Thomas Tshikaya has also assisted the ASU defense with stellar contributions. Tshikaya has really stepped into the limelight for the Rams defense as of late. This week he led the team with 18 total boards, with 15 of those being counted as defensive rebounds. He has averaged nine total rebounds over the past two games and has pulled down at least six total rebounds in each of the last four games for ASU. Against McMurry the big man pocketed three steals and three blocks to add to his numbers. Offensively, the French native dropped 16 points for the week and was 7-for-11 (.636) from the field and added a solo 3-pointer and foul shot to the mix.
