Rams set for NCAA DII South Central Championship

SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State baseball program will be making its fifth trip to the NCAA Division II South Central Championship this week when the Rams travel to Grand Junction, Colorado to compete for the regional title as the third seed of a six-team, double-elimination tournament at Sam Suplizio Field.

The Rams (37-15) earned an automatic bid to the regional tournament after winning the Lone Star Conference Championship and will open the South Central Championship at 1 p.m. (CDT) on Thursday against No. 4 Colorado State-Pueblo (39-14). Colorado Mesa (47-7) won the RMAC regular-season and tournament championships and will host the regional tournament as the top seed. The Mavericks, who won last year's regional championship and are 25-3 on their home field this season, will open against No. 6 St. Mary's (38-14). West Texas A&M (35-18) is making its second regional tournament appearance after earning an at-large bid and will play No. 2 St. Edward's (40-11) which won the Heartland Conference tournament title.

"I'm excited about this year's tournament because I feel like we are good enough to win it and advance to the College World Series," ASU head coach Kevin Brooks said. "I'm sure every team that was selected feels that same way, but our team is playing really well right now and I have a lot of confidence in them. We played great throughout the last couple of weeks of the regular season and continued that in the conference tournament. We've been saying all year that we believe in our team and that we have a special group."

Angelo State, which is one of 48 teams still playing, enters the regional tournament having led the Lone Star Conference in 14 statistical categories this season and leading the region with a 3.03 pitching staff ERA. ASU has outscored its opponents this season 286-177 and has a .299 batting average which led the LSC. ASU also led the conference with 472 strikeouts while Ram hitters have only struck out 301 times in 1,633 at-bats. The Rams have a 38-8 home run advantage over their opponents and led the conference with a .969 fielding percentage.

The South Central tournament will be played from Thursday-Sunday and sends the winner to the NCAA Division II College World Series which will be played from May 23-30 at the USA Baseball National Training Complex in Cary, North Carolina.

Angelo State is 8-7 all-time in the regional tournament and won the title in 2007 as the sixth seed. The Rams, who are 406-228 all-time in program history, also advanced to the South Central Championship in 2009, 2012 and 2013. ASU was the third seed in 2009 and 2012 and was the fifth seed in 2013.

ASU is 6-2 all-time against CSU-Pueblo after sweeping a four-game series in 2012 at Foster Field and then splitting another four-game series in Pueblo, Colorado in 2013. The Rams and ThunderWolves have never met in the postseason and did not play this season. CSU-Pueblo, which did not play an LSC team this season, earned an at-large bid along with the Buffs and Rattlers. ASU has also never played WT or Mesa in the postseason, but is 1-2 against the Hilltoppers and 0-1 against the Rattlers in regional tournament play. St. Mary's won the only postseason meeting with a 7-6 walk-off win in 13 innings during the 2013 tournament which was played in Kingsville. The Rams and Buffs are 4-4 against each other this season after ASU earned a 6-5 win in the first game of the LSC tournament, while ASU is 2-0 against the Rattlers this year after sweeping a home-and-away series.

The Rams enter the regional tournament having swept their way through the LSC tournament and having won 10 of their last 11 games. ASU won the South Central Championship in 2007 with a 5-1 record to advance to the College World Series which included a win over St. Edward's.

ANGELO STATE STARTER REPORT
Angelo State junior Steve Naemark (9-1) comes into the regional tournament second in the nation with 114 strikeouts and is ninth with a 1.11 ERA. He was named the NCBWA South Central Pitcher of the Year on Tuesday. A left-hander in his first season with ASU after transferring from Cochise College, Naemark was named the Lone Star Conference Pitcher of the Year after earning three LSC Pitcher of the Week honors along with two NCBWA South Central Pitcher of the Week awards. He also gained national recognition with a NCBWA National Pitcher of the Week honor and a Collegiate Baseball National Player of the Week selection after a 15-strikeout performance against Regis. Naemark, who is a Brett Tomko Award semifinalist, has already established the single-season program record with his 114 strikeouts through 97 1/3 innings this season and has only allowed 12 earned runs and 21 walks throughout the season. He has recorded five or more strikeouts in 14 games this season, including his 15-strikeout performance against Regis and then a 12 strikeout game against Lubbock Christian and an 11-strikeout gem against Eastern New Mexico. He is coming off a six-strikeout win over West Texas A&M where he threw 6 1/3 innings in the opening game of the LSC Championship. His 1.11 ERA is the best in ASU history and would also establish a new LSC record which is currently held by Josh King who had a 1.76 ERA in the 2001 season for Northeastern State. Opponents have been limited to a .205 batting average against Naemark this season through 15 starts and 16 appearances. Along with his nine wins, he also has a save which came against St. Mary's in San Antonio when he recorded the final two outs on six pitches.

"This was a season where I was able to stay consistent throughout and never really got away from what I was trying to accomplish," Naemark said. "There were really no bad spots in the season. I'm really appreciative of the way our coaches have helped me out the pitching plan they put together to make me more effective. This is the best season of my life. I'm having a great time doing it with our team and am looking forward to achieving even more success."

Angelo State senior Blake Bass (10-2) is coming off an eight-strikeout gem in a win over Tarleton State in the semifinals of the LSC Championship last Friday and enters the regional tournament with 99 strikeouts this season and 138 in his two seasons at ASU. Bass transferred in last year after playing his first two collegiate seasons as a positional player at Texas Tech. A right-hander from Lubbock, Bass was named to the LSC first-team and then to the LSC All-Tournament Team after his domination of the Texans in Kingsville. Bass has recorded five or more strikeouts in 12 games this season, including establishing a career-best 12 strikeouts in a win over ENMU after previously striking out 10 in a regular-season victory over the Texans. Bass, who was named a NCBWA second-team selection on Tuesday, has been identified as the No. 3-ranked Division II professional prospect and was also named to the LSC All-Academic team and the CoSIDA All-District Academic Team. He currently has a 2.18 ERA which is the second best ERA out of the LSC and the 45th best in the nation. His 10 victories are the eighth most in the nation and his 99 strikeouts are the 10th most throughout Division II baseball. He has only allowed two runs in his last three starts which have spanned 20 innings and where he has struck out 26.

Bryce Zak (5-6) has the third most strikeouts out of the LSC with 85 after striking out seven through five innings of work in the LSC tournament final against Tarleton State where he did not receive a decision. A junior right-hander, Zak has a 10-7 career record at Angelo State after transferring in before the 2013 season after pitching his first collegiate season at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. Zak went 5-1 with 38 strikeouts during his sophomore season during 2013, but then missed the entire 2014 season with an arm injury. Back this season, Zak has shined throughout despite limited run production in his 13 starts. He has recorded five or more strikeouts in 11 games this season, including establishing a career-high with 11 strikeouts in a win over Regis in only five innings of work and then recording 10 strikeouts through six innings in a win at West Texas A&M. Zak also had nine strikeouts against Texas A&M-Kingsville and has allowed only 20 earned runs through 69 1/3 innings of work this season. A San Angelo native, Zak has limited opponents to a .249 batting average and has surrendered only 33 walks this season. Through 115 innings in his career, opponents only have 114 hits. Zak was earned LSC second-team honors this season for the Rams.

"He never gave up on me and kept working with me to get me to where I'm at right now. Our coaches and my teammates have been supportive ever since I got to Angelo State. I'm just trying to get the job done every time I'm at the plate or in the field. It doesn't matter what the situation is, all I'm trying to do is help our team win."
