SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team moved to 2-0 on the season Sunday afternoon with a 75-48 win over Howard Payne.
The Rams had three players drop in double figure points, while improving to 43.6 percent shooting from inside the arc and 82.6 percent from the charity stripe. ASU outscored HPU on both points off of turnovers (31-14) and points in the paint (28-14). Â The Rams led by as much as 27 points during the second half.
"It's always nice to get a win," commented ASU Head Coach Cinco Boone. "We try and win every game and to start off the Coach Messbarger Classic with two wins was good. I think its two games we can learn a lot from and get better. Overall we're very pleased with the weekend."
Lorenzo Dillard led the way sinking 6-11 from short, and 2-3 from beyond the arc for a team leading 16 points. Prince Foster and Quay King rounded out the group scoring 15 points each. Thomas Tshikaya and Justin Hollins headed the Rams defensive efforts for the afternoon. Tshikaya grabbed a team most eight boards and added eight points to his total for the day. Hollins once again led the squad as he posted six total blocks inking four in the first four minutes of the game.
The Rams got things started early with a 7-0 run to begin the game that saw a jumper by King, a three by Dillard and a pair of free throws from Foster. Â HPU would rally and take an 8-7 lead at the 15:10 mark. The Yellow Jackets would extend its lead by as much as 11 points with 22-11 on the board with 11:10 on the clock. With another Dillard 3-pointer kicking off a 14-2 run, the Rams would regain the lead with 8:00 left in the first half. HPU would follow with a pair of free throws to make the score 26-25 in its favor, but a free throw from Foster and a jumper from Tshikaya got ASU back on track. Consecutive jumpers from Dillard and King, closed out the first half scoring for the Rams as the two teams headed into the half with ASU leading 34-31.
The Rams would continue to add to its lead in the second half as its offensive production would improve. Â King opened the second half for ASU knocking down a shot from beyond the arc which was followed by a Hollins slam. DeVonte' Pratt and Kevin Booze would get into the action in the 11th and 10th mins as Pratt rolled in a layup and Booze sunk a 3-pointer to push the lead to 54-37. Chase Riley would sink a pair of foul shots to give the Rams its largest lead of the game. This would also be the final two point of the game for ASU as they would place a check in the win column for the second consecutive day.
The Rams return to the court in the Junell Center on Friday, November 25 at 4 p.m. to take on St. Mary's out of San Antonio.
