Ram Baseball Falls to Aggies in Series Finale

SAN ANGELO, Texas – The Angelo State baseball team fell, 13-7, in its series finale with Cameron on Saturday afternoon, however, completed the weekend with a 3-1 series win over the Aggies.

With the loss, the Rams now sit 18-11 overall and 11-5 in the Lone Star Conference. Starting pitcher Paxton DeLaGarza was credited with the loss and is now 2-2 on the year from the hill. The senior tossed 1 1/3 innings and gave up six runs on seven hits.  ASU was out hit 18-to-10 by the Aggies. Cameron climbed to 17-10, 6-10 LSC with Saturday's win, and Aggie pitcher Blake Welch moved to 2-0 with the win.

Angelo State struck early as DeLaGarza and Tyler Coolbaugh were plated off of a pair of Aggie errors. This was followed by Steven Pinales crossing on a Jay Gonzalez ground out to second base. With the score 3-0 entering the top of the second, Cameron answered placing six on the board and then followed with another two in the third to give them an 8-3 lead.

In the bottom of the third Pinales stroked a RBI single that scored Sam Kohler to bring the Rams within four runs. Then in the fourth, Matt Waller doubled to left center which pushed Christian Abilla and Gonzalez across brining the Rams closer to taking over the lead with a score of 8-6. Cameron responded quickly adding two in the fifth and three in the sixth to give them a 13-6 lead. In the top of the eighth Nathan Ruane would hit an RBI single to right to give ASU its last run of the game. The Aggies would hold on to take the victory.

Kellen Rholl, Joey Wise, Dustin Angiel, Jayden O'Dell, Joe Hauser and Garylon Brown all made relief appearances for Angelo State throughout the game. O'Dell led the staff retiring four batters on strikes. Brown marked a team second two strikeouts in a team leading three innings of work.  

At the plate, Abilla led the squad in hits, going 3-for-5, and scored a team leading two runs. Pinales recorded a team second two hits, recorded the team's only stolen base for the game and drew a team leading two walks. Waller and Coolbaugh recorded the teams only multi-base hits, as each recorded a double for the game. Waller recorded a team most two RBIs, while Gonzalez, Ruane and Pinales all recorded one each.

The Rams hit the road to San Antonio for a single non-conference game with St. Mary's on Tuesday, March 29. First pitch for this game is scheduled for 6 p.m.
