SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State soccer team clinched at least a share of the 2017 Lone Star Conference regular season championship on Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 upset win over No. 11 Midwestern State.
It is the third time the Belles (11-2-1, 8-1-1 LSC) have won at least a share of the conference title after sharing it in 2013 and winning it outright in 2015.
ASU went down early in the game after Mustang Destinee Williamson found the back of the net in the 22nd minute. It was one of just two shots MSU got off in the first half only five the Mustangs took all game.Â
It took 13 minutes, but the Belles got the goal back before the half ended, as Trenadey Scott fed Cassandra Moosburger, who shot the ball past the MSU goalkeeper. The goal was the sixth of the season for Moosburger, who is now tied for third in the LSC in total goals. It was Scott's fourth assist, tying her for first on the team and giving her 32 total points for the year.
Scott also created several scoring chances herself, getting off six shots, including two on goal. Elizabeth Rodriguez led the team in shots on goal with three and had five total shots, while Moosburger had three of each. Avery McNeme had three shots with two on goal, and Ally Warren had two shots on goal as well.
Overall, the Belles took 26 shots, marking the second highest single-game total of the season, 16 of which were on goal.
Warren made both of her shots count, scoring the second and third goals of the game to lead ASU to the win.
Warren's first score came less than 10 minutes after Moosburger's, right before the two teams broke for halftime. Senior defender Callie Smith started the scoring effort, taking a free kick from midfield after an MSU foul.
Smith's kick went into the penalty area, where Warren headed it past the Mustang goalkeeper. It was the sophomore's first goal of the season and also Smith's first assist of the year, putting ASU up 2-1 heading into the break.
Smith also led the defense in the match, as she and Marissa Brezgiel played all 90 minutes along with Meagan Denn, Kylie Deel, and Kyah Carlsen on the back line. The five shots allowed was the second fewest ASU has given up in a game this season.
The Belles increased their lead to 3-1 midway through the second half as Warren found the back of the net for the second time in the game. This time the ball was passed in from the right side by Tiffany Dang and Warren hit it over the goalkeeper for the score. The assist was the second of the season for Dang and it ended up being Warren's second career game-winner
MSU got one goal back not long after as Julia Orozco scored, but the Belles hung on from the final 15 minutes of the match for the 3-2 win.
Angelo State will be at home again next weekend, taking on Texas Woman's at 7 p.m. on Friday before playing Texas A&M-Commerce at 1 p.m. on Sunday for Senior Day.
