LUBBOCK, Texas - The Angelo State men's basketball team fell to Texas Tech, 88-69, in its first exhibition of the 2017-18 season.
Daron Mims (19) and Ran Tut (13) led the way for the Rams offensive attack as both recorded double-figure points for the game. Defensively, DeVaughn Jenkins pulled down a team leading four defensive boards on the night. James Kirksey and Antonio Singleton came away from the matchup pocketing a pair of steals a piece. Rounding out the top performers, Ja'Michael Brown came away with a team most four assists.
"I think our team got better tonight," commented ASU Head Men's Basketball Coach Cinco Boone. "We stayed healthy which is huge in exhibition games. We're excited about the progress that the team made tonight and look forward to coaching them. I'd like to express my thanks to Texas Tech, Chris Beard and his staff for hosting us."
The Red Raiders started the game with a dunk placing two on the board for TTU. The Rams responded quickly sinking a three-ball by Mims taking the first of three leads in the half. A pair of free throws by Brown would bring ASU to within one with 29-28 on the board. The Red Raiders would regain its footing and pull away. A jumper by Jenkins would close out the half for Angelo State as it would head to the locker room with an eight point deficit, 45- 37.
Texas Tech opened up the second half increasing its lead to 13 at the 16:28 mark. A 16-3 Rams run which was kicked off by a Tut layup would get ASU back on track and back into the lead for the first time since midway through the first. ASU would only sink seven more points for the game, and a 13-0 TTU streak would secure the victory for the Red Raiders.
Angelo State continues it exhibition slate with a trip to Houston, Texas to take on the University of Houston. This will be the second consecutive season that the Rams will face the cougars in an exhibition bout.
