SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State Soccer team will host the 2017 Lone Star Conference Women's Soccer Championship this weekend, playing against Eastern New Mexico at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at the ASU Soccer Field.
The Belles (12-3-1, 9-2-1 LSC) have a bye in the first round of the tournament after finishing the regular season in the No. 1 spot. The No. 5 seed Eastern New Mexico defeated the No. 4 seed Midwestern State 4-0 on Wednesday night for the right to face ASU in the second round.Â
"It feels good to be hosting," Angelo State head soccer coach Travis McCorkle said. "We were picked fourth in the preseason poll based on what we did last season, and I didn't really argue with that. The team has exceeded expectations that were there at the beginning, but those expectations quickly changed once we got into the season and really saw what we could do."
ASU earned first place outright last Friday with a 1-0 win against Texas Woman's. It is the third time ASU has won the conference and the second time for them to finish the season with sole possession of the title.
The Belles finished the regular season with the best offense in the LSC, averaging 2.19 goals per game for the season. They also had the second best goals against average for the year, allowing just over one goal per game.
Sophomore Trenadey Scott leads the attack, having scored 15 goals this season. The Fort Worth native's 15 scores are tied for the second most in a single season at ASU, as Sierra Anderson also scored 15 in 2014. Scott already has the second most points in a single season with 34 this year.
Scott leads the LSC in almost all offensive categories, including shots, points, goals, and game-winning goals. She is also tied for seventh in assists with four.
Four other ASU players have scored multiple goals this season, including Cassandra Moosburger with six, Elizabeth Rodriguez and Mackenzie Broderick with three each and Ally Warren with two.
Other Belles who have scored include Avery McNeme, Tiffany Dang, Janessa Dunbar and Molly Warren.
McNeme is also tied for the team lead with four assists in her freshman season. Scott and Megan Allen also both have four this year.
Defensively, Angelo State is led by senior captain Callie Smith, who has played center back for the team all year and leads all field players in minutes played. She has been joined on the back line by Marissa Brezgiel, Kylie Deel, Meagan Denn, Kyah Carlsen, Cecilia Guerrero and Amber Norris.
ASU has also been helped by Sammy Cude, who has started all 16 games in goal. Cude has already surpassed her 2016 save total with 81 this year. Her save percentage of .827 and her goals against average of 1.06 both rank second in the conference. She also earned her sixth shutout of the year against Texas Woman's last Friday.
Forward Ariel Lopez leads Eastern New Mexico this year, ranking third in the conference with seven goals in 18 games. The Greyhounds have averaged exactly one goal per game this year.
