SAN ANGELO - The Angelo State basketball team started off its 2017 home slate in style, topping Arlington Baptist 106-50 Friday night in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
The Rams moved to 3-0 on the season, finishing with five players scoring in double figures on the night in Brandon Williams, James Kirksey, Kiair Crouch, Will Adler and Brandon Conwright. The 56-point win was tied for the sixth largest margin of victory in school history and the largest since a win over McMurry in 2014.
"I thought we did a lot of really good things tonight," Head Men's Basketball coach Cinco Boone said. "We had 26 assists and just eight turnovers, which has been a point of emphasis for us. It was a good team win and good to start the season 1-0 at home."
Forward Brandon Williams scored the opening bucket for ASU in the game and ended up leading the team in scoring as well. The senior hit a jumper 30 seconds into the game and sparked a 9-0 Ram run to start the game.
The Patriots finally got a basket four minutes after the tipoff and were able to cut the lead to 11-5 at the 14:21 mark, but ASU responded with an 18-point run to push the lead back out to 24 points.
A defensive rebound from Antonio Singleton and another bucket from Williams pushed the lead to 31 points with just over two minutes left.
The teams then traded several buckets with the lead dipping to 28, but freshman Brandon Conwright hit a three-pointer as the buzzer sounded to push the Angelo State lead to 33 heading into the halftime break.
Will Adler continued the ASU hot streak to open the second half, drilling a three-pointer. Adler finished with a career-high 10 rebounds and 10 points, earning his first double-double as a Ram as well.
Kiair Crouch and Ja'Michael Brown followed with back-to-back three-pointers of their own, pushing the ASU lead to 47 points with 18:28 left to play in the second half. Crouch finished with 11 points and Brown had 5.
Antonio Singleton led the team in assists on the night with seven, and the Rams had 27 as a team, marking their highest total of the season. Â
With just over 13 minutes to play, Angelo State extended the lead even further as James Kirksey hit a pair of free throws to go up by 53.
The Ram lead got to its largest point with 10:33 left to play, as forward Ran Tut hit a jumper to put ASU up by 58 points. Arlington Baptist had its best run of the game over the next two minutes, scoring 11 of the next 13 points to cut the lead to 49.
The smallest the lead got the rest of the game was 48 points as ASU traded buckets with the Patriots, but the Rams closed the game on a 10-4 run, winning by 56 points.
ASU will play one more game in the Ed Messbarger Classic this weekend, taking on St. Edward's at 7 p.m. Saturday in the Stephens Arena at the Junell Center.
