SAN ANGELO – The Angelo State men's basketball team will partake in a trio of games this week culminating with the Thanksgiving Day Tournament on Friday, November 24 and Saturday, November 25.
The currently undefeated Rams (4-0) will first hit the road as it travels to San Antonio to face St. Mary's on Tuesday, November 21 at 7:30 p.m. It will then return home to host a two day Thanksgiving Day tournament with games against Central Baptist College on Friday, November 24 at 7:30 p.m. and Lubbock Christian on Saturday, November 25 at 7:30 p.m.
ASU will enter the week beating its opponents by an average margin of 22 points as the Rams prolific offense has scored an average of 97 points per game. Its defense has limited the opposition to just 74.8 points while pulling down 41.3 boards per game. Angelo State is hitting 53.4 percent of its shots from inside the arc thus far and has been equally dangerous from long range nailing 40.3 percent of its three-balls. The team is also sinking 71 percent of its shots from the stripe.
With a 1-4 record, St. Mary's will head into Tuesday's match looking to rebound from a 77-64 loss to Randall University out of the NCCAA. The Rattlers currently lead the series with the Rams 21-13, but have fallen to ASU in the last three meetings between the two. STMU is only averaging 62.6 Points per game while it has allowed its opponents to average 69. This is a shooting margin of -6.4 points per game.
Headed by former ASU assistant coach Chris Wright and graduate assistant Clint Galyean, Central Baptist College will enter the Stephens Arena with a 2-1 overall record. CBC is located Conway, Arkansas and is part of the NAIA, competing in the American Midwest Conference. The Mustangs have only faced one other NCAA Division II team in Delta State University, which resulted in a 72-62 loss.
Finally, The Rams will take on South Central Regional opponent Lubbock Christian. The Chaps are riding a 0-3 losing streak; however two of those three losses coming at the hands of two top ten teams in No. 9 Colorado School of Mines and No. 6 UT – Permian Basin. Both of these losses were within a five point margin. The Rams lead the overall series with the Chaps 13-4, with the last competition between the two (2015-16) coming down to a two point, overtime Rams victory (70-68). The Chaps are scoring 77.3 points per game thus far and have been outscored this season by an 8 point margin.
Senior Brandon Williams will look to head the squad for the second straight week. The Houston native led the Rams offense this past week going 15-23 from short range and 3-5 from the charity stripe to score 33 total points. Defensively, he pocketed four steals and a team leading four blocks on the week. The forwards also added a squad third most 10 total boards.
Heading the Rams offensive onslaught will be James Kirksey, Will Adler and Ja'Michael Brown. Kirksey continues to lead the Rams with 62 total points thus far, averaging him 15.5 points per game. The newcomer out of Chester, Pennsylvania also leads ASU with 27 total boards and an average of 6.8 per contest. Adler follows closely behind hitting a team second 15.3 points per game. This includes going a team leading 12-31 from beyond the arc. He is also third on the Rams with an average of 5 rebounds per game. Rounding out the group, Brown has averaged 12.3 points per game. The point guard has also headed the team distribution with 18 assists on the season.
Ran Tut, Daron Mims and Antonio Singleton will provide great depth off the bench. Tut has mainly contributed to the team's defensive efforts as he is currently second on the team with a pair of blocks and has tallied 18 rebounds to his name.
Sinking 54.8 percent of shots from short range, Mims had played a major role in Angelo State offensive successes. The junior has average a total of 10.8 points per game and has also recorded 16 rebounds on the season.
Finally, Singleton has been a well-rounded shooter as the junior out of California, has turned in good shooting percentages from all areas of the court. Stroking 12-20, he is hitting 60 percent 2-point range. He is second on the team with five threes and has taken advantage of trips to the line nailing 15-17 free throws, 11 boards; a steal and a block complete his numbers for the season thus far. Â
