KINGSVILLE, Texas – The Angelo State men's basketball team fell to Texas A&M – Kingsville (76-69) in its conference opener on Tuesday night.
The Rams slide to 6-2 overall on the year and 0-1 in the Lone Star Conference with the road result. ASU had three players mark double-figure numbers on the night, with Ja'Michael Brown leading the way with 17 points. Antonio Singleton (14) and Will Adler (12) followed closely behind. Angelo State hit 47.2 percent of its short-range jumpers and 43.8 percent of its 3-ball. The Rams we outscored in both points off turnovers (17-9), however lead in points in the paint, 34-32. Brandon Williams (5), Daron Mims (4) and James Kirksey (4) headed the Rams in the rebound department for the night. TAMUK improved to 8-0 with the victory.
Trailing 3-0 to start the first half, Angelo State brought the score back to even with a Singleton 3-pointer. However, the Javelinas quickly responded and pushed its lead to seven points with 12 – 5 on the board and 15:17 on the clock. Started with a pair of free throws from brown, ASU would again close the gap and bring the game to within a single point with a 6-2 run that would bring the score to 14-13 with 13:06 left in the half. At the 11:12 mark, an Adler 3-ball would tie the game for the second time, but as before, TAMUK would respond and pull back in front. Adler would later stroke another shot from beyond the arch with 44 seconds left to take the Rams first lead (35-34) of the game. The two teams then headed into the locker rooms tied at 37.
William Tcheingang would open the second half for Angelo State at the 18:59 mark with a layup that would place the team ahead, 39-37. However, as before, Texas A&M – Kingsville swiftly rebounded and took back the lead. Adler would return one last time, at 15:27, hitting another deep shot to take the Rams final lead of the game as the Javelinas would take it back. ASU would make one last 9-3 run with 4:42 left in the game that would pull the Rams to within one (63-62).
The Rams will look to rebound from its two game skid as it returns to the Junell Center on December 7 to take on Midwestern State and again on December 9 to face Cameron. Thursday's game versus the Mustangs is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. and Saturday's game against the Aggies will tipoff at 4 p.m.
